Therefore you should design your media queries and breakpoints mobile-first. That means start writing css for your smallest screen size and then add media queries in which you define how the styling should change for increased screen size. Mobile devices are constantly evolving and today's phone screens are as big as yesterdays tablets. When deciding on which breakpoints to use, a good approach is to be inspired by already existing frameworks such as Bootstrap, Bulma or Foundation.

Instead of having one big chunk of styling at the top of your css/sass/less file and then, below, a media query wrapping another big chunk of styling for a certain breakpoint I tend to keep the media query blocks small and close to the selector they modify. In sass i even nest the media queries into the selectors they modify.
