How do you monitor and troubleshoot cloud MDM performance and issues?

Cloud MDM solution can be the answer for the organization to manage their devices without having any on-premises environment. Their is no dependency upon setting up on-premises servers, however cloud can still utilize it if required. The scenario will be called hybrid. With cloud based solution, u can push applications, deploy updates, push scripts, look for compliance. Certain features can be used to secure the identities.

As SCCM is a matured product, it can provide a high level of control of managing the devices including app installation, OS deployment, updates etc. However, this kind of solution requires high cost as multiple servers, roles and products are required such as Windows Server, SQL server etc. To run the environment smooth, lots of dependency is required with various skillset. Perhaps cloud-base MDM solution should be the way if you haven't planned it yet. Better start with hybrid approach utilizing workload and cloud attach feature and slow and steadily migrate completely to Intune which is a modern management.

The only real advantages I can see when talking about on-premises MDM versus cloud-based is that the established systems are extremely feature-rich and mature, and secondly, the ability to run them completely disconnected from the internet.

Firstly, it depends on your needs. However, some aspects to consider are: 1) Budget: usually over a period of 4+ years the On-prem is cost-effective 2) Flexibility: The cloud option will be more flexible in usage and offer many more features than an On-Prem deployment of MDM. 3) Frequency of Updates and Upgrades: Most MDM rollout the updates and upgrades on the cloud version within 45-60 days, however, the On-prem version will get updates/ upgrades in about 120-180 days. 4) Compliance: Mostly in specific industries, On-prem becomes a default choice because of the stringent requirement of control over Data.

You must need to understand the Pros and Cons for Cloud MDM vs On-premise MDM. Cloud MDM Pros: No complexity, easy to adapt, easy to manage, better cost control, solution available for corporate and BYOD device. Cloud MDM Cons: Windows server not supported, internet connectivity is must, difficult to troubleshoot, reporting may not be too great. On-premise Pros: Full control with greater visibility, better performance if configured correctly, granular level of control. On-premise Cons: High running cost, down time, higher cost for maintenance because of various skillset is required for managing server, sql, sccm etc.

It depends on the system environment you are running. This means that if the entire system and associated licences are on-premises and will remain there for the foreseeable future, or if you use very specific group policies or other rules, there is no need to change. The on-premises software is not going anywhere. But if your system already has cloud components or you are thinking about moving to cloud systems, I would recommend looking at cloud-delivered systems. It is cheaper, more flexible and uses the latest technologies than running a fully on-premises setup, with less maintenance time and cost.

Intune provides inbuilt reporting and monitoring feature which can provide us good insight on assignment status, troubleshooting the task and more. We can further explore the option by: 1. Utilising Microsoft Graph. Every link you access on Intune is utilising Microsoft Graph in the backend. It is becoming more prominent to learn this. 2. KQL queries - These are read-only queries through which you can explore so much for cloud based data. If you are familiar with Sql queries then kql query learning will not be so difficult to learn.

Every cloud-delivered service I know of has built-in monitoring tools. For Microsoft Intune, there are also lots of ways to monitor actions, progress and so on using PowerShell scripts in conjunction with log analytics. And now you have the ability to use a powerful workstation query tool (Advanced Analytics) when using the Intune suite.

You should always consider the licensing and associated costs of your system. For example, Intune is included in M365 licences. So there is a clear benefit in using it. Secondly, it is advisable to take advantage of existing synergies. This means that if you have a predominantly Microsoft setup, it makes sense to use Microsoft management software. Another example would be Meraki MDM, where by using the network components you at one time got a number of licences for free. Finally, your staff. Try to use existing skillsets or see if you can upskill or hire someone with the necessary skills. The best system will not work properly if you do not know how to use it.
