Projects can have positive or negative impacts on the communities where they are implemented. As a project manager, you want to maximize the benefits and minimize the drawbacks of your project for the stakeholders, the environment, and the society. In this article, you will learn some practical tips on how to reduce the negative effects of your project on the community.
The first step is to identify the potential impacts of your project on the community, both direct and indirect. You can use tools such as stakeholder analysis, environmental impact assessment, social impact assessment, or risk analysis to evaluate the scope, magnitude, and likelihood of the impacts. An example of this is when I was helping to Marshall a rally for the gubernatorial race in Philly. We didn’t have a enough port-a-potty’s. Needless to say we were in a funky situation and needed to act quickly to remedy the issue. Thanks to our home staff on the ground, we were able to connect with local coffee shops and bars to let those who participated in rally use their facilities free of charge while the event was taking place. And before you ask why they would be charged to go to the bathroom, we were in Philadelphia.

Something that can help in taking care with community impact is consent. Not only the typical consent forms for a research project, but a genuine and ongoing conversation around consent and how community members are being impacted and feel about the project. With so much need to focus on including and centering marginalized populations in research and project development and so much history of exploitation and harm to these populations, there’s a big risk of doing projects ‘to’ a group of people instead of with them.
