If you want to change the way things are done in an organisation it is critical that you engage early with people. Typically when faced with change employees are either in favour of the change, need some convincing or are opposed to the change. Good engagement early on in the change process will avoid surprises (for you and employees) and help convince people of the need for change rather than them feeling that change is being imposed on them. Most powerfully though, it will allow employees to put forward their own ideas and to shape some of the proposed solutions.

A lot of people will immediately think of an annual engagement survey to measure employee engagement, but i think bi-weekly 1-on-1s provide a much better opportunity to check in with people. It's in person, it should be safe and confidential, employees are more likely to share detailed feedback about possible issues. Ensuring your employees feel confident and removing that fear and nervousness is a great way to get them to open up to you. So having an informal chat regularly scheduled with your team provides you with a real sense of what's happening.
