How do you measure onboarding success for new hires?

Probably the biggest hurdle is to establish a standardized feedback process using a tool which automatically can manage this. once a tool is in place its important to not only measure once but more often i.e. after 7 days (focus is to ask if the new hire got everything needed to start working such as equipment, get to know the team, etc.), after 30 days to understand if the new hire has settled within their organization and role and after 6 months to understand if the new hire has a clear understanding of the role and attached goals as well as how the can generate impact.

After leading the LinkedIn Talent Solutions Onboarding program and the Udemy Onboarding program, I have learned that adding feedback loops via surveys, conversations or feedback meetings is essential to collecting the timely and accurate data on the new hires onboarding satisfaction and experience. However, what's just as important if not more is their 'role readiness' satisfaction. Are they setup for success after completing the onboarding program? Do they feel the onboarding program truly prepared them to be ready to sell? Including sales process, methodology, use of tech tools, systems, narrative/messaging, etc. Feedback loops are essential and I recommend making space in your calendar to go through every comment, score and evaluation

Start by identifying what the key onboarding metrics are for a new hire and the impact to the business, including new hire quota. Create a new hire scorecard and track new hires as they ramp through those metrics. Make sure to include benchmarks for each metric so you can see if they are under or over performing each one. Manager of the new hire must be involved in this process and be teaching/coaching them along the way or a buddy partner. Have some assessments ready at 30/60/90 day mark. or longer if needed. Make sure there is a feedback loop ready to go. Some surveys to gauge value, time and role readiness will help determine if the learning experience is going well/needs work. I remember a time when an onboarding program was refreshed by a teammate (as updates were needed and timing was right). The individual had full reign to revamp the program. After the revamp was finalized and deployed, I was surprised to see some of the changes made, often wondering who approved these types of changes (ie. several hours of online elearning async videos, day after day). Once you know this information will help: - your organization improve the onboarding learning experience - feel your employees valued - retain your employees more because their oppinion matters and is implemented - your entire company because your will have better prepared new hires and ready for their new roles

Three key stakeholders to request feedback from are the new employees, the managers, and your HR business who handle the tactical onboarding processes. The most impactful moments to request their feedback can be at 7,45,and 90 days into the onboarding experience. This will give you a 360 view of how your onboarding strategy is impacting them and give you the opportunity to make changes to improve the experience and address pain points before the 90 day milestone.

The onboarding is a view/experience for a new joined who joins any org. as that experience is what helps the person to build an image for the company, colleagues, and much more. I believe onboarding an experienced person is comparatively much easier than onboarding a set of interns because interns come with a lot more energy and everything for them is new and is very easy to impress them at first but very complex to settle them down into the systems because they need to learn how the corporate works and then how the company functions and we have to make sure that their excitement levels are brought to the saturation level and help them settle. Sometimes you have to cross boundaries and even help them personally as well.

Onboarding can't only be about learning. It needs to include practice space and opportunity. And a capstone certification. Before any seller begins to interact with prospects/customers, I highly recommend a certification.

In my experience it is also beneficial to have KPIs to measure the impact of your onboarding experience. - Employee experience satisfaction - Favorability of the hiring managers onboarding experience - Measuring the completion of any onboarding tasks (mangers or new employees) Creating KPIs around any technology you are using to support your onboarding strategy is also beneficial. This is helpful in assessing how well it is automating, saving time or simplifying processes within your onboarding experience.

To ensure a comprehensive view of your onboarding program's effectiveness, go beyond the usual metrics of retention rates and time to productivity. Good practice: Solicit feedback from new employees on their onboarding experience. Better practice: Solicit feedback from new employees, hiring managers, and HR. Good practice: Conduct exit interviews for employees, especially those who leave in their first year. Better practice: Have managers conduct stay interviews to understand what keeps them at the company. Good practice: Encourage new employees to announce their new role on social media. Better practice: Capture the employee net promoter score- are they encouraging others to work for your company?
