How do you measure and monitor water loss in your network?

In my experience, many water utilities in developing countries do not realise how much water is actually lost, because they lack flow measurements at the main network installations, like wells, reservoirs, pumps, entrances to the pressure zones. I have seen so many (up to 90%) of water meters installed only 5-6 year ago, but already not functional due to the lack of maintenance (missing parts, no batteries, disconnected wires). Actually, in this situation qualified and sufficient personnel for the field operations is the key. There are money and projects, but no follow up and allowances for the maintenance and replacement parts, after those projects are finished.

Water loss and leakage is a tragedy of any city. What a difference it would make if cities would increase their efforts towards better monitoring leakage and losses. Water is truly precious and crucial for our survival. It's the blue gold! Investing in regular programs to monitor and repair leaks would make such a positive impact.

Drinking water often is seen only as a social problem. In reality it has an even greater impact on the economy because the missing electricity which is needed to stabilize and promote the growth of the economy, is wasted by the drinking water suppliers by leaking pipes, inefficient pumps etc.... Often I am involved in AID projects where the whole thing is already critical. The Water reservoirs are running dry and the electricity supply is failing daily, so that the waterworks are operated with expensive and environmentally harmful diesel generators when the power fails. In the end, in desperation, the people look for help, mainly in the form of new loans to make significant investments.... This can not be the solution !!!

On a regional water supply project, satellite imagery was used to identify unusual vegetation patterns and ground wetness, which were correlated with subsurface leaks in large-diameter transmission mains. Using specialised water audit software enables the comprehensive analysis of water loss data, including system inputs, authorised consumption, and unbilled authorised use. By inputting data collected from various parts of the network into water audit software, we could generate a more accurate water balance and identify areas with potential for significant non-revenue water reduction.

Employ infrared & thermal imaging technologies to detect subtle temperature differences caused by leaking water, especially effective in identifying underground or concealed leaks. For a large-scale industrial complex, integrating thermal imaging into regular inspection routines uncovered leaks in buried pipelines that were not detectable through conventional methods, leading to significant water savings. Explore the use of satellite imagery & remote sensing, particularly useful in vast or inaccessible areas. A project I was involved in used satellite data to identify unusual vegetation patterns indicative of persistent ground wetness. Install data loggers at strategic points within the network to continuously record flow & pressure data.

By tracking flow and pressure we can measure water loss in any network. For flow measurement need to use Electrometric Flow Meters and for Pressure measurement need to use right pressure transmitter. So by tracking flow and pressure and optimizing pressure in real time, it saves water, energy and money.

Measuring water loss in a network requires comprehensive data analysis of water input, consumption, and output. Yes accuarte measurements is very important. Water meterng plays a significant role in this. Basically two types, customer metering and metering at system inlets/communication points, etc. The later is a part of network monitoring. Pressure monitoring in the differnt identified locations is also very important. IWA water balance, specially if you can follow the bottom up approach, you can have a better picture about the water consumption withn a defined area, provided that if you have a accurate and updated database (customers, billing, meter management, etc.) We're talking about measurements, basically water metering. Use of appropriate equipment (types of water meters) and correct installation affect to the accuracy of measurements.

Water companies are employing a variety of methods to monitor & manage water loss. *Flow meters in the network, can accurately measure water flow & identify discrepancies that may indicate leaks. *By monitoring water pressure at points in the network, companies can detect pressure drops that may signal leaks or bursts. *By dividing the network into districts & installing metering devices, companies can monitor water flow & pinpoint leaks. *Acoustic sensors can detect vibrations produced by escaping water. *Pressure management techniques help optimise water pressure in the network. *Data analytics are being used to analyse historical data and predict potential losses in the network, facilitating predictive maintenance & optimisation.

To monitor water loss in your network, Metered Zones (Mzs) shall be developed and these MZs shall be linked communication devices like GSM kits, RTUs, gateways or IoTS. Through these communication devices data can be acquired remotely with live feed and water loss can be monitored. However, for localization of water loss different methods like acoustic devices or inline sensors can be used.

Flow and pressure monitoring in your network is the key. Having flow meters (at the inlet and communication points (basics) and at times other important locations within your area, sometimes large cinsumers) and pressure sensors at strstergically important locations installed in your network is a must. They mut be equipped with data loggers (better with data telemetry) This is basics in network monitoring. It alerts you with potential leakages if you have close eye on the behaviors. On the otherhand, having noise loggers (at times with hydrophones) connected with central station, intstalled at identified locations in your network helps to identify potential leakages quickly. We can sum-up all above works as Active Leakage Cintrol (ALC)

Monitoring water loss requires continuous data collection and analysis. Implementing real-time monitoring systems with advanced sensors and software allows for the ongoing tracking of water flow and pressure. Regular inspections and audits of the network also help in detecting leaks and inefficiencies, ensuring prompt action to address issues.

Install pressure-independent control valves (PICVs) and pressure-regulating valves (PRVs) to maintain consistent pressure levels and mitigate the risk of leaks and bursts. PICVs automatically adjust flow rates based on demand changes, ensuring optimal pressure conditions throughout the network and minimizing water loss. Common methods to reduce physical water losses: - dividing network into sectors and DMAs. Each DMA would ideally have one entrance (maybe one exit) with flow/pressure measured continiously. This allows monitoring and detection of abrupt increase in flow (big leak), and precise estimate of DMA's consumption flow. - installation of Pressure Control Valves at DMA entrance, which allows lowering night pressure and thus reducing the risk/flow of leaks (pressure optimisation); - quick and efficient repair of visible leaks; - searching for invisible leaks, which traditionally require walking above pipes with acoustic leak detection equipment on regular basis. Modern technics for invisible leak detection are available now, but might be more costly.

Let's start from basics... When talking about water losses in networkswe have two type physical lossess (leakages) and commercial losses. Basically follow the IWA approaches in reduction of Physical and Commercial losses. For physical losses 1. Speed Repairs 2. ALC 3. Pressure Management 4. Asset Management If you are jumping directly to 3 or 4 without looking at 1 & 2, no, you are in the wrong track. This is the senario in most of the utilities particularly in developing countires. You have similar approaches for reduction of commercial losses. So, better starting from basics.

I see that the water problem is a financing problem. Reducing non-revenue water will minimize the cost and make the investment in water utility profitable.

Reduction of Water Loss, means we have an extra amount... This enables to supply more water particularly for those who are not benefitted with the service at present. This brings down the cost of water. OPEX. When you have leakages in your network, there's a chance of water cintamination, specially when you have low pressure in the network or when you have intermittent supply. So, reduction of water losses by leakages means, we ensures the quality of water till it reaches the customer. In brief, reduction of water losses increases the Level of Service of the utility.

Smart Metering- In a recent project, we implemented smart metering across the network. This technology provided real-time data on water usage and identified anomalies indicating leaks. Pressure Management- By adjusting pressure in different zones, we reduced the risk of leaks. Lower pressure in low-demand periods significantly decreased water loss. Acoustic Leak Detection- We used acoustic sensors to detect the sound of leaking water. This method was particularly effective in identifying non-visible, underground leaks. Infrared Imaging- Infrared technology helped us spot temperature differences caused by leaks, especially in large, industrial settings.

Water management is a continuous improvement methodology. It has many of the steps discussed above but, it more about a mindset. Operators need to be hired who have the right mindset to implement these tests and maintain records. Generally it is slow leaks that cost large sums over the life of a building. I once worked with an operation team that had records from their water meters for over 10 years. The records showed that there was a 2% increase in water consumption starting the fourth year and slowly increasing to 8% by year 10. By following the records and normalizing with the loads over that same period, we ascertained that there was a constant slow leak in the system.

Measuring and tracking water leakage sources and maintain it to minimize the losses. I think private sector participation through a model of sharing profits with the support of financial entities will help accelerate solving this problem.
