One of my best tips for scheduling is to set *aggressive* (but not unreasonable) dates for key deliverables. When discussing a timeline with a set of engineers, I often ask, "What's a reasonable duration to budget for this activity"? Then I'll follow it with, "What would we have to do to cut that in half?" I'll push for their buy-in on that task's more aggressive (read: shorter) duration. *BUT* I'll still plan for the successor tasks to begin closer to their initial "comfortable" date. Then, I use the predecessor "lag" to build a buffer between tasks to allow for slippage. Sometimes, we arrive 'on time' based on the buffers. But, more often, we make aggressive dates and arrive on schedule, and my team looks like heroes.
