How do you measure the impact and ROI of PDM training and certification on your business outcomes?

In my role as a PLM consultant for Automotive Steering manufacturer, I played a key role in making some big changes. We said goodbye to old-fashioned paper-based processes and embraced digital tools like Windchill PDM. We also carefully analyzed the benefits of our PDM training through ROI assessments. Our metrics were closely linked to the enterprise overall goals, creating a sense of teamwork. By using Kaizen and value stream mapping, we made our processes smoother and made Windchill easier to use for the NPD team. All of these efforts made it easier for Design and Development team to adapt, reduced training time, and boosted productivity. This helped the organization to stay competitive in the automotive industry.

Initially before conducting the PDM training and certification program, define what your end outcome. Are you aiming to reduce cost, increase usage, or uplift the knowledge base? Once you have the outcome defined, tailor your metrics to align with your final goals – whether it's increasing the data literacy, increase the team's throughput, reduce system downtime or increasing footfall. Then you should plan to impart some kind of feedback mechanism to understand the impact of the program and scope of improvement. Remember, a well-defined plan and thoughtful measurement strategies pave the way for a successful PDM training program!

Measuring the impact and ROI of Product Management (PDM) training and certification involves both quantitative and qualitative metrics. Key performance indicators include improved product delivery times, increased customer satisfaction scores, and higher employee retention rates. Financial metrics like revenue growth attributable to product improvements and reduced development costs also matter. Surveys and feedback from team members and stakeholders can provide insights into enhanced skills and productivity. The first step is to baseline business performance today, measuring the things that you would like to see change (throughput, errors, delays etc). How do you put those measures in place? Secondly, an important consideration is bias. If the performance changes, how sure can you be that it is linked to the changes you made? Perhaps the change is linked to the annual performance review period? Finally be aware that training is only part of the solution.
