Then, during the discussion, monitor participation levels, engagement, and the quality of contributions. Afterward, gather feedback from participants through surveys or evaluations to assess their perception of the discussion's effectiveness. Additionally, analyze any tangible outcomes resulting from the discussion, such as action plans, decisions made, or insights gained. Compare these outcomes against the initial objectives to determine the discussion's impact on achieving goals.

Consider these two examples to see why articulating the goal for the discussion matters: A) This discussion will be successful if... the group generates as many ideas as possible, and everyone contributes at lest two ideas. The group will lean into phrases like "Yes! And..." and "What if we..." > Goal: brainstorming, ideation; innovation, challenge the status quo B) This discussion will be successful if... the group gathers ideas then evaluates them. They'll consider hurdles, feasibility, and impact, ultimately ranking and selecting their top 3 ideas. > Goal: evaluating, ranking, prioritizing, decision-making As you plan, reflect and ask articulate: "This discussion will be successful if ___." "This matters because..."

Formative means you're checking for understanding and learning along the way. A poll or quiz does not make sense in the middle of a group discussion. To monitor progress, walk among the groups and listen to the conversation. Ask strategic open questions. Informally take the temperature of the room (Fist-To-Five strategy, etc.). If this is a group discussion as part of a work team ,not a training/workshop, say things like: "How can I help? What do you need from me to keep moving toward the goal? Are you hitting any hurdles? Give me a quick status update!" Summative assessments are at the end of learning, to see whether the goal is met. Your summative format/evidence should be based entirely on your original goal for the discussion.

Use technology to the collate data and present it so that is visually clean, easy to understand at a glance. 3. Add your human ‘touch’ and expertise in presenting the findings, offer insights in regards where the strong and the weak points are, offer advice for the organisation to more forward and how to address those challenges.
