I am not sure if I do agree with the mentioned stages. I would either mention joiner-mover-leaver or identification-authentication-authorization. Not per se this specific mixture.

These encompass four stages—provisioning, authentication, authorization, and deprovisioning essential for identity and access management. IAM life cycle management and governance are critical to ensuring security, compliance, and operational efficiency within an organization. Below are the metrics 1. Provisioning | De-Provisioning Time : Avg. time taken to grant access to new, remove existing or modify access for existing users. Anything low time indicates an efficient IAM process. 2. Access Request Approval Time : Avg. time taken to approve or deny access requests. Anything high time indicate overly complex workflows or insufficient resources for timely decision-making. 3. Access Review Completion Rate : % completion. Towards 100% indicates strong governance and adherence to compliance requirements.

I see IAM Lifestyles concerning themselves with much more than an identity. There are entitlement, roles, credentials. Also each one has some form of maintenance, in life there are events which update meta data associated with entities being managed.

Those days are gone, when basic IAM stages are been followed and post that governance framework, now a days its all governance driven, so applying governance policies, rules, responsibilities to be defined at the first level.

Get your logs aggregated from all technical and business domains in scope, and point an Enterprise appropriate reporting solution at it, then build the reports and dashboards around what it is you need to know. Adjust strategic and tactical plans accordingly, and assign the actions to remediate back to the owners. Don't forget trending over time and projections reports.

To give IAM a boost, think of it as gardening. First, you examine the garden closely, spotting any areas that need extra care or missing blooms (gap analysis). Next, you plan out which plants (remediation) might fill those gaps and which measures can stop problems from cropping up again. Then, involve the whole neighborhood (stakeholders), sharing gardening tips and highlighting the beauty of your blossoming garden. Look at data. Your audit findings related to access creeps and missed attestations, Segregation of duties - should be improving after implementing IAM processes. IAM projects are mostly driven by compliance initiatives so your access related auditable data should be improving with each audit cycle.

I see the KPIs as top priority in measuring the effectiveness of any IAM life cycle management. In practical sense, while it is important to onboard a resource on time, offboarding thier access and privilges becomes paramount. We need to have granularity in measuring them like a normal access like LAN ID to be disabled with 12 hrs from the evening of the leavers last working day and for any privileged account the access should be removed with in 24 to 48 hrs. Like the same way, in case of internal transfer between departments the access and privilges from the privious department should be removed with in first 24 hrs to avoid any SOD violations.

Choosing an IAM solution is a crucial part. 1. IF no internal IT team -> Go for SaaS 2. IF extensive customisation is required -> Go for Commercial of the shelf product (COTS). 3. IF extensive compliance is required -> Go for Hybrid. Try to avoid building an IAM solution in-house as it comes with heavy investment (to make it enterprise grade).
