First of all you should use a document scanner, this is the best way to get a great quality image without doing anything! Most document scanners are optimised to deliver the best image for your OCR engine .. many will even generate this image on the fly... automagically! The reason I recommend a dedicated document scanner is that usually they will come with a TWAIN and ISS driver whereby you will have many opportunities to customise your scanning experience. You will be able to decide what image type you receive, the resolution, file format and even utilise some image cleanup tools. My advice is to always use a dedicated device.
