A great tool for clear visibility into the impact of good leadership in higher ed is an adaptation of the Balanced Scorecard. A traditional scorecard has 4 compass points: customers; internal business processes; institutional learning/innovation; and financial performance. I worked on a team to adapt this framework to higher ed, and there are some necessary tweaks, but the main points still apply. For example, in the short term you should be improving internal business processes. For the long term, you should have ongoing learning and innovation efforts. And you always need to be satisfying stakeholders like customers and financial players (e.g., bondholders). A balanced scorecard is a great way to measure the impact of good leadership.
