I use the traditional pen and paper method while I make notes for public speaking. I have the habit of breaking the topic into major headings and use the 'PREP' method for each heading. P - Point R - Reason E - Evidence P - Point and Conclusion This actually helps me channelize my entire thought process and structure my speech in a way that is relevant and specific.

Use iPad whenever possible but it’s sometimes hard to get the speed right. If I am doing a powerpoint, and I always am I make a copy put into notebook with any extra notes on the other side. As much as possible I try not to use notes just single points to remind me of the topic

My secret tip is to record my own voice and practice the speech/script the night before the presentation day and keep listening back and forward to my own recording to make adjustments. Then, with the best available version, I will listen to the audio on the day when I travel to the venue. P.S. You just need a phone to do all that ;)

Here are a few pointers on notes I use. 1) When creating a new presentation topic, I initially write a script as it helps refine the language I use when presenting and setting the flow of your delivery. Practise runs: I will use the script to build memory. 2) I create summary notes from the script, usually in the form of a short set of words to trigger a recollection of the story that I wanted to share. 3) Never read the words on a slide. They are for the audience, not for you as a speaker. 4) If tech reliance or availability concerns in a live event, put notes on index cards - not post-it notes as they curl and don't fit in a pocket easily. 5) Remote presentations are reliant on tech reliability. Having notes on index cards is pointless.
