How do you manage remote work policies?

I agree with this tip….. expectations are the key to every interaction where you expect something from the other end of the conversation about any subject.

Setting clear expectations is important in the workplace (remote or in office). Beyond setting clear expectations, it is crucial to set realistic expectations. When working remotely maintaining consistent communication is the key to success. Creating solid relationships between team members and management can be more difficult but it is equally important in both environments. Going out of your way (manager and employee alike) to communicate, develop deeper a relationship, and consistently collaborate in a remote environment will not only lead to success in that area, but it will also breed success of the team overall because these are fundamental to high functioning departments.

Establishing clear expectations in a remote culture involves written communication, defining roles, and setting measurable goals. Collaboration tools aid in tracking progress, while regular check-ins ensure alignment. Detailed project briefs, performance metrics, and accessibility promote transparency and accountability. Encouraging open communication, documenting policies, and offering training foster a positive work culture. Leading by example reinforces expectations, ultimately enhancing productivity and job satisfaction in remote teams.

Personally, I find a lot of comfort in routine. Setting up my days and weeks in a way that works to maximize my productivity. In a remote environment it is critical to establish an understanding of availability with your teammates. I typically like to do this using my calendar. Blocking off time I'm unavailable for meetings due to being away from the computer or a reserved time block to actually work. Routine can also help you not overwork and burn yourself out. What is your end of day routine to end the work portion of the day and fully transition to period of personal time so you can come back the next day rested and ready to go.

Having a routine all the way through and set boundaries and expect to be respected put the remote work at risk. We all know that while working at home then your house life doesn’t care that you are on a zoom session and the pipe brake right? You have to attend to it. Then the employee will say sorry I have to take of this problem. If there are limits to be asked of either party, then there it should be also flexibility. Meaning that we can have flex boundary. Let me expand on that thought. In my team I am the designated go to person in this time frame then it pass to the next person. Thinking of the team as a doctor on call can make a lot of people understand that life happens but also problems at work !

One thing I realized when remote working is that you have to remember to take regular breaks, even if they are just five minutes. You can find yourself so engrossed in work that hours will pass without you even realizing. Set an alarm and every couple of hours go outside, get some fresh air, walk or stretch if you can and give your mind a break from work.
