Another critical factor is ownership of key initiatives. Take personalization for instance, in a centralized organization all elements to do personalization sit within the same decision makers lane. In a decentralized environment each element is controlled by different teams or stakeholders, making open communication and collaboration critical.

In my experience, the biggest drawback to a centralized organisation is the inability to respond to the fast-pace changing technology. Centralized organisations arent equiped to respond to technology shifts.

It may result in the loss of economies of scale and control over finite financial resources. As a result, the cost of operation rises when everyone does things differently and has no control.

No matter the type of organizational structure, it is essential to adapt your leadership style to effectively manage change and innovation. For centralized organizations, leaders must be directive and authoritative, but also supportive and communicative. Goals and expectations must be set, but employees should also be involved in the decision-making process. Feedback and recognition should be given, while autonomy and initiative should be encouraged. In decentralized organizations, leaders should be more participative and democratic, but also more strategic and visionary. Authority and responsibility should be delegated, while guidance and direction should still be provided. Collaboration and innovation should be fostered while alignment and consistency are maintained.

Regardless of which organizational structure you are in, its critical to learn how to delegate certain levels of decision making to provide some accountability for team members. If you make all the decisions and provide all the answers, your team won't grow and they will be dependent on you for everything. This makes it difficult to take time off because the time can't run unless you are there which leads to burn out and stress.

Communication is essential for managing change and innovation in any organization. If your organization is centralized, you should communicate the why and the how of the change and innovation. Explain the rationale, the benefits, and the steps and expectations. Use both formal and informal channels to communicate frequently and transparently, but also remember to listen and respond. For a decentralized organization, it's important to communicate the what and the who of the change and innovation. Share the vision and goals, but also the roles and responsibilities. Utilize both formal and informal channels to communicate openly and inclusively, while also respecting and trusting your team.
