How do you manage board-staff relations?

There needs to be a life stage approach to this as well. The roles between the board and the staff are likely to be blurred in younger organisations and mature as separate as orgs evolve. There also needs to be a distinction between types of organisations . Advocacy organisations are more likely to have board and staff engaged as one in programme delivery. Wearing the appropriate hat in a given circumstance is more important.

Effective board-staff relations hinge on clearly defined roles and responsibilities. It's crucial for the board to focus on strategic aspects like setting the organization's vision, mission, and policies, while overseeing financial and governance matters. Meanwhile, the staff plays a pivotal role in translating the board's decisions into actionable plans, managing daily operations, and providing progress reports. Mutual respect for each other's expertise is paramount, fostering an environment where micromanaging and undermining are avoided. Open communication channels and periodic check-ins further strengthen collaboration, ensuring a harmonious partnership that drives the nonprofit towards its goals.

As a board director, it is important to foster a respectful and collaborative relationship with the executive director (ED). To demonstrate this respect, I aim to seek the ED's agreement before getting involved with staff members through social media posts and staff development initiatives. By seeking agreement, I acknowledge the ED's authority and ensure that my role is supportive rather than undermining. This collaborative approach promotes a harmonious working environment where the ED's decisions are valued, and my involvement is focused on assisting and enhancing their efforts.

I think that it is important to understand cultural elements as well. Board and staff are human beings and not robots designed for specific tasks/ engagements alone. and will develop relationships outside of this engagement. They could be friends, neighbours, colleagues from another workplace, college mates etc . They may be invited to each other's social gatherings as well .Conversations around the organization are likely to emerge in these relationships. While this could augur for strengthening the relationship and therefore the engagement with the organisation, it might also lead to a blurring of lines . ITs important to remember that any conversation outside of a board room cannot have any action implication.

In my nonprofit journey, cultivating trust and collaboration between the board and staff has proven essential. Building a positive rapport rooted in mutual respect and recognition is foundational. Operating as a cohesive team, both parties should capitalize on their unique strengths and skills, fostering an environment where input and advice flow freely. Conduct individual check-ins and implement a 360-degree feedback system to promote transparency and mutual understanding. Emphasize the importance of feedback on decision-making processes and governance structures. Organize periodic retreats or workshops for collaborative discussions. Actively respond to feedback by implementing tangible changes, cultivating a learning culture that views feedback as an opportunity for growth.

It's important to acknowledge that both staff and board play important roles in an organization's governance. When we try to draw a line between 'governance' and 'operations', we ultimately fail in clarifying roles because organizations are complex, and that separation is abstract and artificial. A better approach is to establish which specific governance functions board and staff will each lead on, and to create clear accountability mechanisms for both. Staff need to understand that the board has the authority to step into operations as needed. And the board needs to understand that stepping into operations puts the organization at risk. Boards and staff need to work together to balance these realities in a constructive way.

As a board director, I strongly believe in facilitating staff members' professional and personal growth. This can be achieved through various means, such as sharing relevant resources, providing opportunities for growth outside the organization, and offering candid feedback. By actively supporting and investing in the development of the staff, we contribute to their success, which ultimately translates into the success of the entire organization. Recognizing that the growth and fulfillment of our staff members directly impact the organization's overall achievements, I am committed to fostering an environment that prioritizes their well-being and helps them reach their full potential.
