How do you make your slides stand out with animations?

When picking animations for your slides, keep it simple and purposeful. Use fade-ins or zoom effects to spotlight key points, and motion paths to show step-by-step processes. For comparisons, wipes can work great. Engage your audience with click-triggered animations or subtle fades to keep things interesting. Stick with a consistent style to look professional and avoid overwhelming effects. Make sure the animations flow with your speech and always preview them to ensure they add clarity, not clutter.

I don't necessarily use animations sparingly (guilty as charged!), however they are consistent and highly relevant to the content. If an animation doesn't help with my story-telling or provide impact to the presentation, I won't include it.

I create my own animations to provide content that no one else has seen before. I watch speakers at other events in my field and try to bring something new to the table in terms of my presentation animations; by doing something they're not doing. This makes me and/or my presentation memorable.

I use different speeds of animation techniques depending on the need. If I’m not expanding on a list of words, bullet points or phrases, I will time the animations with delays so that they all appear under one click, but spaced out by pre-timed delays. If I am expanding on points, I’ll have one point per click, so I control when they appear.

Previewing and testing your animations is key to a smooth presentation. Run your slides in slideshow mode to see how the animations look and make sure they sync with your talk. Test them on different devices to check for consistency. Get feedback from a few people to see if the animations enhance your message or need tweaking. This way, you avoid tech issues, keep things professional, and make sure your animations highlight the important stuff without being distracting.
