For key stakeholders that are not planners or in planning, it is important for them to understand what urban ecology is, in the simplest form. It is more important for them to understand what is about to be able to incorporate it into their thinking and decision-making. To this end, planners have to ensure they have practical examples with every explanation and definition. Visual examples and impact in the natural environment it critical.

Perhaps the best way to incorporate urban ecology into places would be for it to be given a clear value. This value can then be compared with other more usual issues which have to be considered. This approach would enable decision makers to recognise the importance of urban ecology. The value can then be balanced against all the other competing priorities in urban planning. The construction industry and proper urban planning costs a lot of money and therefore risk to the developer. By giving a value to urban ecology it would provide a clear impression of the cost/benefit and prevent urban ecology suffering from cost reduction.

I would recommend a visit to major cities that were planned to incorporate natural features as essential components of the long-term city plan. My hometown of Chicago is an excellent example, although I am admittedly biased. Walking these carefully planned natural preserves while surrounded by a major city will instill a recognition for past genius while also opening your mind to contextual possibilities in your communities.
