How do you leverage group decision making for innovation and problem solving?

As you assemble a diverse group of individuals, you're not just collecting opinions - you're creating a dynamic system where perspectives intersect and collide. This is where the magic happens. When individuals with different backgrounds and expertise engage in open dialogue, they begin to challenge their own assumptions and mental models. This process of cognitive dissonance can lead to a deeper understanding of the problem at hand and the emergence of novel solutions. To harness this collective potential, it's essential to establish a culture of psychological safety, where participants feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and opinions without fear of judgment or retribution.

Beware of over-dominance by vocal members. This can silence quieter, potentially valuable voices and skew the decision. Avoiding decision paralysis is crucial. Too many opinions can delay action and dilute focus. Be cautious of information overload. Too much data can overwhelm the group, making it hard to prioritize and decide effectively. Watch for hidden agendas. Personal interests can cloud objectivity and hinder genuine collaboration. Lastly, ensure accountability. Diffusion of responsibility can lead to half-hearted contributions and poor follow-through. Balancing these factors is key to leveraging group decision making effectively.

Well, it’s called free association - where coherence/structure is not necessary for drawing insights. Group brainstorming is similar - only, you don’t have a shrink or a patient!?? The group leader invites ideas from all group members who can contribute freely without the fear of being judged. No ideas are considered wrong, diversity is encouraged and creativity/innovation is welcomed. Once this exercise is complete, there is a treasure trove of innovative ideas from which you can choose the most suitable ones. Group brainstorming is much like free association, only the former leverages the power of the group! ??

One of my favorite ways to leverage a group in decision-making is to reframe it as "separate togetherness." Remember, every group member is a boon for collaboration, but not necessarily for consensus. I like to have each member give their thoughts or perspectives in a non-confrontational manner, like via post-its or on a virtual whiteboard, without the input of other team members. Then, we can all look at the suggestions and vote. This allows for every member to have equity in the collaboration process and decision-making, while reducing/eliminating group think bias

As you facilitate group decision making, be mindful of 'social loafing' - when individual effort decreases as group size increases. To combat this, establish clear expectations and accountability, and use techniques like 'nominal group technique' to encourage equal participation and idea generation.
