How do you leave a lasting impression with your personal statement conclusion?

You started strong, built substantial interest in your profile with anecdotes and instances now comes the conclusion. First, don't get tired towards the end. The conclusion needs the same homework as the other sections. A quick recap of the thesis you have built in the remaining part of the personal statement gives the reader an opportunity to affirmatively decide if you presented a strong candidature.

Remember this is a personal statement; not an essay. So avoid the temptation to (a) summing-up what was spoken earlier, (b) using a oft-used quote as the clincher, (c) bringing in an alternative dimension. A good conclusion should leave the reader hooked. Ending with a surprise, may be a good idea. Asking a question about what's being discussed could be a way out.

When concluding your personal statement I suggest briefly summarizing the key experiences and achievements that highlight your fit for the program. This recap should link your journey and skills directly to the program’s offerings leaving no doubt that you are a strong match.

All schools and programs offer education, curriculum, activities and network. What is it that you won't miss for anything in the world when you are there? That's what you may want to add here in the conclusion of your personal statement.

This is always helpful and in my experience as a graduate student and someone who guides intending students on how to properly write their personal statements, mentioning aspects of the program that intrigues you and some valuable knowledge increases your chances of receiving an offer letter from the school. It gives a sense of in-depth research and genuine interest in the program.

How well do you know yourself and your audience? What traits do you have that connect you to them? If you have done adequate self reflection, you have the theme of your personal statement. Avoid making the personal statement a rewrite of the resume rather it should show the personality behind the resume or the achievements. Finally these traits as a summary in the conclusion will assist your case if presented well. Add it only if required here as well. We don't want to overdo things.

To truly stand out, I recommend ending with a personal touch that reflects your unique personality or aspirations. Perhaps share a short anecdote or a meaningful quote that ties into your journey. This helps admissions officers connect with you on a deeper level.

Be respectful of admissions counselors' time. They are reading through a large number of these statements. In this circumstance, complexity is not a strength. Instead, rely on clear communication and a creative approach to stand out.

Brevity is key. With the word limits getting shorter for personal statements and essays, clarity of thought and communication is the only way. Editing and fine tuning after writing your first drafts is important. A clear closing statement which leaves the reader with 3 things i.e. What motivates you? What do you want to do in the future? How do you fit with the program and the school? would form a good checklist to go with.

Think of the conclusion as closing the loop in your Personal Statement. In the end, it is important to recap the key points as to why you want to pursue this degree in the first place, why are you passionate and what would all of this enable you to do. Do you have a vision that would be possible as a result? Always remember, when you start strong, you have to end strong. Once you're done writing, leave the essay alone for a day and come back to it and read it again. Ask yourself if the essay is impactful from start to finish. Seek advice from a few trusted people, preferably ones who have been through the process, or are in admissions as they have an understanding of what is required from a personal essay.
