Start with something simple and then progressively try doing more intricate things. That said, shell scripting is not like SQL query writing even though similar concepts exist. Shell scripting is very efficient for system management and you can write scripts that are excluded on a schedule that make it to where you really don't have to mess with the shell/terminal again unless there's something specific you need to do.

There are numerous database software programs out there. Some open source, others paid solutions. My personal favorite is using PostgreSQL because it's the most feature rich and powerful RDMS I've used compared to SQL Server and MySQL/MariaDB. It's also open source. SQL Server has a free/express version, but it's stripped down and if you accidentally create/enable a job in SSMS you've activated a 30-day trial period for a paid enterprise edition.
