How do you learn new digital skills and tools on your own?

Learning new digital skills and tools on my own is all about curiosity, discipline, and leveraging available resources. I begin by exploring online tutorials, taking advantage of platforms like Coursera, YouTube, and LinkedIn Learning to build foundational knowledge. Hands-on practice is key—immersing myself in projects, experimenting with real-world applications, and troubleshooting along the way. I also stay connected to communities through forums, blogs, and social media to exchange insights and keep up with trends. By maintaining a mindset of continuous learning and adaptation, I steadily acquire and refine new digital skills.

In the non-digital world I found that learning something without any purpose never lead to sustained progress. This also applied in the digital world. So first, I recommend to define or find the purpose. Once you defined the purpose, what you actually want to achieve through this effort, you will find it much easier to decide which tools to choose, and you will find it easier to set your progress. In work related situations I found it also useful to consider impact and resources. I wanted to learn using project managing software, and my initial idea would have been well over the available budget. Any proposal would have been useless.

While some people worry about spreading themselves too thin, the truth is: Learning different things is a good thing. It’s called skill stacking, Why do it this way? Because in a world where people think you need to be super good at just one thing, skill stacking is like having a secret weapon. It's not about being perfect at everything; it's about being good at putting things together. My mix of skills isn't a compromise — it's a plan.

Having self-learnt several tools across the Microsoft suit like Power BI, PowerAutomate and beyond (GitHub, SAP and a lot more), I've realised that the best approach is to get your hands dirty on real life problem solving. I spent weekends and extra hours over office timings in watching youtube & other tutorials when I was self-learning. But the actual robust knowledge that I gained, came when I started implementing those to solve real life issues that I had identified, started getting stuck, asking folks who were already well versed in those, reading up on the internet a lot, going to and fro in my hit and trial; and finally launching a solution in which now I would be the expert end-to-end

there are plenty of online resources to learn anything and everything online. Find out which is the best channel for you, i find videos/podcasts useful as a start to learn the topic, videos are best for hands-on type learning and forums for to seek other who are also interested in that topic. Conferences are also a great source to learn the landscape of the many suppliers/vendors out there and you can find out quickly how they stack up with one another.

Designing your learning path and environment is a lot litk setting up a project. First comes some level of analysis of resources and capabilities. Diving right in might satisfy curiosity and drive for results, but it might also mean a waste of time, frustration and eventually giving up. There are plenty of resources to evaluate and reshape your ideas. The effort will also pay off when setting mid-term goals and manage your expectations.

I found there are so many trial and test versions of even very sophisticated and expensive systems out there. It is great to try and learn in the real environment. However, this needs a plan and expectations. Otherwise you risk losing your free month for example. In forums and usergroups there are probably people who have gone through your experience. I found their reports useful, also encouraging many times.

I think given how rapidly technology progresses, it is important to always be learning. For me, I like to obtain free trials or freemium versions of software to test them out and get hands on. I recently tested out DeepSeek and found the technology extremely impressive, after using it, I didn't want to go back to ChatGPT!

You stop trying to memorize everything and start experimenting. It’s like learning a new language. You don’t need to know every word on day one. You start with basics, then expand gradually. So: ?
