How do you learn from other leaders and mentors?

One of the most valuable sources of learning for leaders is undoubtedly having a mentor or a coach by their side. This experienced guide can provide personalized advice, support, and invaluable feedback throughout your leadership journey. Having a mentor or coach who possesses greater expertise, knowledge, or skills in a specific area of leadership or your career can be immensely beneficial. I personally know the significance of a mentor as I am still in contact with my mentor from 25 years ago. Their guidance and mentorship have been instrumental in shaping my career. In fact, my mentor played a pivotal role in opening the door to my latest opportunity at Accenture.

Seek out a mentor or coach who can provide guidance, advice, and support in your leadership journey. A mentorship or coaching relationship offers valuable insights from someone with expertise. Engage in networking opportunities to connect with potential mentors or coaches. Building relationships with seasoned leaders allows for learning from their experiences and gaining valuable perspectives.

Having a coach was the turning point in my career (and life), enabling me to embrace Leadership roles with a whole new perspective. Mentors are not always available or do not understand how the workplace works for women, and finding a Coach who listens, challenges, and supports you is the greatest investment you can make in yourself or a company in their people.

Get a 360 degree assessment done and actively seek feedback from peers, subordinates, and superiors. Constructive feedback is crucial for identifying areas of improvement and gaining a better understanding of how your leadership style is perceived. Establish regular feedback mechanisms, such as performance reviews or informal check-ins, to ensure a continuous flow of input. An ongoing feedback loop supports continuous development.

Identify leaders you admire and respect. Observe their behaviors, decision-making processes, and communication styles. Model your leadership approach after the qualities you find inspiring. Analyze both successful and challenging leadership situations. Learn from the successes of leaders you admire and understand the lessons from mistakes to refine your own leadership skills.

Learning stays alive when shared, discussed and analyzed. As an ICF Coach our Delhi chapter is the place where we all listen and help each other with our questions and queries. As the Secretary I strategize the goal with our president while our directors of learning, education, and peer-coaching find the topics that can keep the learning grow and involve the members. Last afternoon I came out of a session and had a doubt. Within 30 seconds of sharing it in the group, I got 3 calls and was settled within 10 mins and ready for the next session. They were not the members I know in person but they reached out as a community member being my mentor at the moment. So for me, a community that learns together is a healthy learning hub.
