How do you learn about cybersecurity?

As someone who teaches cloud security online, I see the value in online courses for mastering cybersecurity. Not only do they offer the convenience of learning wherever you are, but a quality online course will also excel in effective teaching methods and tailor its content to reach a diverse audience.

Learning about cybersecurity involves a combination of self-study, formal education, Practical experience,hands-on experience, and constant adaptation. There are no hard and fast rules, it depends entirely on the individual's current knowledge and understanding of cybersecurity. A quick gap analysis and a clear understanding of the individual's career goals in the field of cybersecurity are essential. This includes determining the specific domain in which they would like to specialize. Once identified, both free and paid resources can be used to build a career and pursue one's chosen path.

Primarily for me I note that the hands on approach works better for me to acquire the skills necessary to get launch into a cybersecurity career. I was fortunate to have worked in several IT support roles with varying aspects of cybersecurity i.e. anti-malware, firewalls, and email gateways. However, for some of the other specific areas of cybersecurity security I was able to leverage online training to get the hands on labs to help me better understand difficult concepts and gain working knowledge of tools I had never used before. So I encourage you, utilize existing online cybersecurity courses, especially once with hands on labs exercises.

I would go-ahead and say that once you know what are the topics need to be studied for a particular position you are aspiring for then it becomes easier to know which online courses will help you out. There are many platforms and online trainings which can guide you as well especially in-terms of hands-on experience which is really useful for Cybersecurity.

Podcasts and videos are excellent ways to learn about cybersecurity. I enjoy podcasts because they allow me the freedom to walk around and multitask. Videos, on the other hand, require me to sit and focus to fully grasp the content. Since I'm a visual learner, videos suit me well, but I particularly value those that go into the details, explaining both the 'why' and 'how' of a concept.

To pick up any new skill, including cybersecurity, it's essential to stay curious. My journey involved reading blogs and articles and watching YouTube videos. But the real learning came from hands-on experience and failure. Troubleshooting those failures was incredibly educational. It taught me different techniques and helped me learn more about myself, especially the importance of patience.

Cybersecurity field is vast and constantly changing over time. What worked for me (and should also work for most of the individuals) is the curiosity and working with experienced people (it maybe your senior colleagues or friends). Working on different projects (or even different job roles) will give you more hands - on experience (both technically and at the management level). This will help you learn different aspects/opinions/perspective about a specific topic/problem. Courses (along with hands - on labs/discussions) can further enhance the knowledge gained. Online forums are also a great source of information to learn about latest security news

Cybersecurity is an essential ethic that needs to be adhered to. It could be an I expert or any naive customer shopping from an e-commerce platform; that could fall victim to a cybersecurity breach. Things to consider before falling prey to cyber/ phishing attacks: 1. Don't open random mails from random senders. (Eg: [email protected]). 2. Hover over links or attachments sent via mails, to check if its leading to a fake domain/ website. 3. Don't respond to marketing SMS's or mails that lure you into monetary gains, surprising offers/ gifts (without knowing exactly: if you participated in those). 4. Don't fall prey to calls/ alerts even from closed ones, if they urge you to do some action urgently. * Take online workshops & be aware! *
