How do you know if your design changes make users happy?

The happiness of the customers is something that is hard to measure. I personally don't believe in the NPS metric, so I would look at these areas to make assumptions regarding customer satisfaction: - increase of your product usage on the daily/weekly/monthly period; - word of mouth - when your users recommend your product without you asking them to do so; - less complaints to the customer support; - users staying longer with your product; and many more (depending on the product area).

User feedback methods are a diverse set of techniques aimed at comprehensively understanding user interactions and perceptions of a product. These methods range from qualitative approaches like user interviews to quantitative tools such as surveys and analytics platforms like Google Analytics or Mixpanel. Usability tests provide hands-on insights, revealing specific pain points and usability hurdles. Reviews and ratings, often unsolicited, offer direct, unfiltered sentiments from users. This spectrum of methods enables a nuanced comprehension of user needs, preferences, and satisfaction levels, informing meaningful improvements in product design and functionality.

To determine if your design changes make users happy, you can employ several methods and techniques: User Feedback: Collect direct feedback from users through surveys, interviews, or feedback forms. Pay attention to their comments, suggestions, and expressions of satisfaction or dissatisfaction. Usability Testing: Conduct usability tests where users interact with your design. Observe their behavior, note any struggles or frustrations, and gather their subjective opinions on the experience.

User feedback analysis is pivotal in refining design. Whether done manually or with tools, it hinges on data type and volume. Starting with precise research questions and user segmentation based on characteristics or feedback offers a targeted perspective. Categorizing feedback with tags or emojis, designating sentiments as positive, negative, or neutral, establishes a structured dataset. Visual representations like charts or word clouds unveil patterns and frequencies, providing a visual snapshot of user sentiment. Ultimately, evaluating design strengths and weaknesses, as well as discerning opportunities for improvement, allows for informed prioritization of enhancements—a fundamental process in creating user-centric products.

Short answer is you can't. Yet, when combined with other methods shared by other contributors here, I find it useful to analyze the geographical distribution of user navigation across defined patterns within the interface. I assess how quickly users complete tasks and whether their navigation is cohesive and occurring regularly relative to the active user count. However, this approach does clash with the dark patterns enforced by performance metrics requested by other departments. Be flexible assuming that users don't take them for granted and restrict neurodivergent users. This mapping works best if you've been involved in designing the analytics metrics, considering factors such as speed, time of day, and reduced bounce rates.

If you don't get proper time doing a qualitative then we should optimize doing it using user tools. You can indirectly do and receive qualitative and quantitative user feedback using tools such as Clarity, Hotjar, etc. Implement it on your products. From the data that you collected, you can find insights and even patterns from the user for an improvement in our products. But still, In my opinion, it's better to validate directly from our users through several methods such as user interviews, field studies, etc.

Combine and mixing tools together based on your budget to include camera based testing such as eye tracking, facial tracking, posture during walk-throughs and tasks can help recognize suttle changes in expression like micro-affirmations and smiles triggered by interaction design.

Research is never done. Changes that are made to designs should be analyzed and then iterated upon. Can you tell what story the new data implies? Users will never tell you exactly what they think - user interviews are flawed in this way - but data will always provide you with how a user acted. This is why it's so important to iterate little by little to get a sense of what small improvements are meaning the most to your users.
