In addition, you need to consider the political aspect of both your research and your publication. Some topics will not be met with enthusiasm by all regimes on the planet, and merely working with a specific field or topic may restrict your future ability to travel to areas where science is less open and less respected. This includes, but is not limited to, China, Russia, most of the Middle East, and Israel. Even if your data and method is bullet proof, regimes who "disagree" with your findings may decide to actively work against you, or restrict your ability to travel to them.

Most of my research material has been gathered in and so much of my research material is already in my collection and archive. I pull back in and try to not make any extra contacts with outside people. I shut down contact to avoid slip-ups. So much of what I write is unknown to outside

Do not share sensitive data with other parties unless you absolutely need to. Even if you otherwise trust them. Few secrets survive an evening with two people sharing a bottle of wine. The term "need-to-know basis" exists for a reason.

Most of my historical research is a recovery of obscure information sets, to be re-used, added to, and cross built. Some information of course comes from prior works, and when that is the case, backwards sharing is a good tool. I have the view with history, that any sharing is important, but of course, it's important to control release of information pre publication of work.
