I love user groups! If you are recruiting in a local market, get on Meetup and find technology user groups in your area. When I was a newer recruiter I started attending a Cisco user group, and unlike other recruiters I stayed through the presentation to the end. After attending a few times and demonstrating to the group I was there to learn, they started opening up the groups starting with me to present the positions I was working on and the trends in hiring Network Engineering professionals. Stay consistent in groups, and show you want to learn and it will definitely pay off for you in the long run!

But make sure the level of certification is mapped to the needs of your experience and the type of job and salary you are aiming for. For example an entry level IT support role requires an A+ certification, not a CCNA.

Don't be afraid to ask candidates you are speaking with to explain technology to you. I've been technical recruiting for 14 years and I still ask about tech I haven't heard of when I am speaking with candidates and hiring managers. IT professionals are lifelong learners and we as IT recruiters should be the same!
