This is quite tactical, but whenever possible, I always try to take direct flights to my destination, and I never check any luggage. That way, I reduce the risk of missing a connection or losing my luggage. And I would rather drive 2 to 3 hours to my final destination than take a connecting flight. The airlines simply can't be trusted.
