How do you integrate journey mapping and storyboarding with other experience design methods and techniques?

In the kinds of experiences I create the journey map is akin to 'the plot'. In creating an immersive experience, I'm taking my knowledge of plot, narrative action, character motivations etc, and looking for ways that these story elements can be carried, not by a group of actors, but my the audience themselves. Or in collaboration between the audience and a cast. So my first step is to clarify what the story is, turn that into a series of 'scenes' or a series of experiences or tasks, or journeys in specific locations. And in doing so to keep asking the question, what of this needs to be carried by live action, design or technology, and what of this can be carried, at least in part, by the audience themselves. *and I'm out of words!
