1 Define your process

The first step is to define your process clearly and identify its inputs, outputs, and key parameters. You need to understand the purpose, scope, and requirements of your process, as well as the customer needs and expectations. You also need to map out the process flow and document the steps, activities, and resources involved. This will help you establish the baseline and boundaries of your process, and identify the potential sources of variation and risk.

SPC is compiled from the collected data of a parameter in the manufacturing process, say, length. The data has a mean value and standard deviation (sigma). 99.8% data points are within +/-3 sigma. This is the capability of a process. Let's say that the rod is to be cut 1 m long and machine's cutting accuracy at 3 sigma is 1 cm. Therefore, in the product design, the specification for the length must be between 101 cm and 99 cm. If the product requires length between 100.5 cm and 99.5 cm. We will have to find a more accurate machine to do the job. In production, machine may deviate so that data points may jump. 2 Measure your process

The capability of the measurement process should not be overlooked. This should consider if the measuremt is automated or is influenced by the person making the measurement. Is the measurement process repeable over time ir its it affected by external influences (e.g temperature, air pressure ). If you are looking to achieve a 6-sigma process you don't want you measurent to be swallowing up a sizable chuck of this because of tool to tool, operator to operator or tempiral variances.

3 Analyze your process

The third step is to analyze your process data and identify the root causes and patterns of variation. You need to use statistical techniques, such as charts, graphs, histograms, and tests, to display and summarize your data, and compare it with the standards and benchmarks. You also need to apply the Pareto principle, the cause-and-effect diagram, and the 5 whys technique, to prioritize and investigate the most significant and frequent sources of variation. This will help you understand the behavior and performance of your process, and find opportunities for improvement.

4 Improve your process

The fourth step is to improve your process by implementing solutions and actions that address the root causes and reduce the variation. This will help you sustain the optimal level of quality and variability of your process, and ensure its reliability and consistency.

From this and the previous steps you should be able to draw up a corrective action for the people running or overseeing the process. This will depend on your organisations approach to SPC and the process being monitored. Some companies have a very rigid approach: if the process appears to have drifted/is drifting out of control, it is shutdown until the root cause is identified and fixed. Others are more flexible and will have process parameters that can adjusted to bring the process back under control.

Remember SPC is not a one time thing. It needs to be integrated as a living part of your activity. Some elements are on going like avg time to… while others may be critical inspection points.
