Working with suppliers to develop products with my focus being in Quality. I have learned that your manufacturing team both at the supplier and at the assembly of the bought items have inputs to improving the products for manufacturability. We always get feedback from operators from suppliers and also OEM.

I had this drilled into me early on in my career. Get the experts involved. Those experts are the ones on the floor that operate things every day. They know so much more than any schooling you will ever go to. Have them pick your project apart and it will be the most successful one you have ever done.

Things that I feel are often helpful is to be on the floor watching the actual process. SOP's are often inaccurate, and speaking with a person who does the job all the time can offer insight into an often forgotten detail, or a process that is failing. Building the area to the workers' actual work and not some theory on paper or a computer screen is the only way to get full buy-in from a production team. Do the jobs for a few days and experience what the workers challenges and successes are on a production floor. I resolved a 20 yrs problem with simple observation, employees could not read SOP's because of native language challenges, resolved a 20 yr quality issue with 6 months with a simple secondary set in Mandarin.
