The best time for assessment is when you start a new job, get responsibility for a new unit or find yourself in a post M&A situation. First, you should acknowledge the advantages of such an opportunity, and push aside the risk involved with uncertainty. Assessment time can be great if you have enough experience in the relevant domain, and you are a great listener, who know how to ask the right questions, and patiently listen to different views. During the assessment phase you should allocate potential change leaders, and start building the right relationship Take in mind that time plays a significant role, long process - even if it very accurate, will create impatience around you. Structure follows strategy. After identifying the strategic gaps, retructuring must follow to allow the organization to achieve the goals. Missions, tasks, power, and privileges must be redistributed to existing and newly created teams and departments. Regular monitoring and adjustment follows. Root cause analysis can be used to identify causes and remedy any failed tasks and missions.

A tried and tested hack has been (feel free to try)- 1. Be critical and do role play. At each step consider yourself in a role of the most critical stakeholder. Eg- During status quo identification try make an Auditors slide deck for your Org. During plan creation be an Optimist Board member to ask for more and then a pessimistic sales guy to highlight risks. During execution create a project managers slide deck for client delivery. I have found that strategy development is a necessary vision, a required exercise, and a destination that should be revisited on a regular basis. It is critical to make sure that the voice of the customer is not missing. This could be a glaring miss, and means that the vision, mission and strategy were developed in a bubble.

Communicate Effectively: Develop strong communication skills to articulate the organization's strategy to all levels of the workforce. Ensure that employees understand how their roles and tasks align with the overall strategy. Making it clear and actionable are 2 of the most important aspects of a strategy that can be implemented. You need buy-in from everyone involved. and without clarity, that will be very challenging if not impossible.

Pay attention to the definition of the goal and how it serve different stake holders. Make sure you adjust the presentation to the different stake holder needs and Expectations. Bring your plan and action to live by echoing it, arrange workshops etc. The detailed plan is your backbone, avoid assuming that other stake holders are as invested as you are.

Set Deadlines and Timelines: Establish specific deadlines and timelines for each task.

This is something I work through often with leaders that I coach. I see many strategies sit on the shelf and businesses struggle to gain traction because they didn’t have a systematic approach to making the mission and vision actionable. It doesn’t need to be complex either. A tool that I put together walks the leader from vision down to their 30/90/1 plan, and when it becomes actionable it becomes very real for them. I can often see the clarity and confidence come over them.

Going back to clarity, if you don’t have it, communication is where things will break down. Focus on simplicity of messaging, and translating it into the terms that each audience cares the most about. The sales team and the engineering team will see themselves aligning in very different ways - make sure you communicate in a way that will be relevant and more easily adopted.

Success could look completely different over the course of a strategic plans' life. Recognizing that strategy is ever evolving, is critical in creating lasting impact. Needs can change, ways to consume change, personnel can change, entire industries gain or lose relevance, and let's not forget the rate in which technology is evolving. It is not possible to stay relevant with the mind set of 'that's how we have always done it'. Being proactive and adaptable are both extremely important for organizations today.

Clear communication is critical to achieving and maintaining alignment of your team. Personally, I've found it helpful to first create a concise "north star" document, stating the core vision, strategies, tactics and metrics for your organisation. Then collaborate with each division's leaders (e.g. Product, Ops, Sales, Marketing, etc) to do the same for their division. Ensure that job descriptions and performance review criteria are aligned with these divisional documents. Step your team, and all new hires, through these on a regular basis. Higher levels of vision and strategy shouldn't require frequent change, but lower levels, such as tactics, will. Re-align the team regularly against the doc, and of course review the doc itself.

Hold a formal strategic review on a schedule that makes sense but at least once a year. It pulls together the leadership team in support of the strategy, and reminds everyone that this is your "why".
