How do you improve your own safety performance?

Be accountable, study, read, prepare yourself and be open…do not see new activities as a negative thing, accept the challenge and deliver. Is not easy to get but that’s the difference between performers and defeaters. Set yourself up and define timelines and commit to them, the best compromise that you have is the one to yourself. Is not a secret formula or magic, be professional and mean it.

The biggest issue I've come across when assessing risks whether it's a construction site or manufacturing facility is that a contractor or employer hasn't even assessed the risks at all and already started doing a lot of work. I think there needs to be more of a focus for small businesses on how they break down the task like with a job safety analysis and assess the safety risks before employees go ahead and start the work. I think that's the constant battle between production and safety where contractor wants to go go but us as safety professionals have to ensure they stop and assess the risks and don't rush through this because that's how accidents happen half the time due to failure on the employer's part to not effectively assess risks.

To enhance safety performance, stay informed on safety protocols, regularly assess risks, prioritize preventive measures, and participate in relevant training programs. Consistent vigilance and a proactive approach contribute to overall safety improvement.

It is particularly important to pay attention to maintenance tasks or annual tasks seldom performed. The assessment of risks is never static!

Very important to take the time to explain why!!! Why the rules are relevant. What could be the possible consequences for not following the rules. Employees do not follow rules that do not make sesnse for them.

Often there are financial penalties for not applying these rules. Make sure you stop work if you’re put in a position where you would need to break a rule. This will make sure you go home safe and meet the terms of the contract.

Ensuring a workplace environment that is both safe and healthy is paramount, and this can only be achieved by strictly following the prescribed safety procedures and protocols. Any deviation from these guidelines can compromise the safety and well-being of employees, which is unacceptable. Therefore, it is crucial to instill a culture of safety and responsibility in the workplace, where everyone knows the potential risks and hazards and takes appropriate measures to mitigate them. Doing so can create a work environment free from harm and conducive to productivity and success.

Learning from others it is excellent. Still more important caring for others. Employees can learn to identify if their colleagues are fit or not to work. Personal factors have a huge influence in our decisions at work.

One way that can help us significantly improve our security performance is by seeking guidance and knowledge from people with more knowledge or experience in the field. Their understanding can be invaluable in avoiding potential hazards and ensuring a safe work environment. It would be counterproductive for oneself and the company to think that we know everything and that we can learn nothing from others.

Actually I disagree with current existing KPIs such as LTIR - for example- to monitor/measure safety performance. Of course these KPIs are always complemented with leading indicators, but it is time to evolve to better ways to measure safety performance worldwide.

As safety professionals we're so focused sometimes on protecting the safety of the workforce that we forget about being alert and aware about our own safety to prevent accidents that can cause serious injuries or illnesses. That is why whenever I'm doing an onsite inspection I am constantly making sure that I am safe and have all the PPE I need to be safe and and being very alert and aware of all safety hazards around me so to protect my health & safety and others around me too. I think it's critical to remember that as safety professionals if we are not setting a good example and being safe ourselves how are others going to follow and do the same? We need to be safe and healthy to effectively do our work to protect safety of the workforce.

It is imperative to maintain constant safety awareness in our workplaces. In addition to remaining alert at all times, this is absolutely another crucial aspect when it comes to guaranteeing both our safety and the safety of the personnel working at our facilities or construction projects. By doing so, we will be able to quickly recognize and address any potential hazards that may arise and take corrective action as necessary to eliminate, control, or mitigate the identified risks. Above all, prioritizing the safety of our work environments should always be our primary concern, so we must ensure that we take the necessary measures and precautions and remain alert in all situations.

One thing I have found helpful is to wear the PPE that I prescribe and do actual work in it. It helps that I have a 1910 house that is full of renovation projects. Wearing the PPE that I prescribe for my workers helps me experience the the performance challenges, and advantages, and also the body burden that is incurred from wearing PPE. It’s not only helped me walk the talk with the PPE that I prescribe for the workers I serve, but it also serves as a forcing function to help me consider mitigations that rank higher on the hierarchy of controls.
