We can all agree a diverse supplier base is a positive. But only if the suppliers can actually deliver. Sadly in some sectors regulations mean you cannot just change a to a supplier that is from a disadvantaged community. Or in some commodities they just don’t exist. We are very much in danger of creating token suppliers to tick a box rather than appointing the right supplier for the solution. I will always award contracts based on capability, value, ethics and integrity. There is no room for tokenism and when safety is at stake I know I can sleep peacefully knowing we selected the right partner. It doesn’t matter whether they are run by woman or that they are an all black workforce. What matters is they are 100% capable.
