Some of the common challenges in cybersecurity includes (1) having a good IT Asset Inventory and (2) choosing how to respond/prioritize risks/vulnerabilities/misconfigurations. There are organizations that enforce risk acceptance forms or risk registers, while some demand a monthly scan of vulnerabilities/misconfigurations and the prioritization starts there for the month. Others track software versions or deployed OS versions. Different companies have different methodologies. But there are industry best practices to follow. Having the right tool, people and process goes a long way to protect an organization.

There are rare opportunities that you will be involved in a tool acquisition. It is important to note how a tool or scanner works. Research or sit down with the support team to know the technology behind so that you are able to compare which tool best suits your organization's needs. Currently, there are tools that handle ticketing for remediation or risk acceptance which takes time to do manually. There are also tools that assign asset value depending on its asset tag, which is then used to prioritize risk and remediation. Make sure you know where are your assets so you know how to scan them properly with the right tool. Are we expecting remote workers? Do we include mobile devices or third party laptops being used for work? Etc

Patch management can get tricky due to the asset involved and the applications being hosted in the asset. It is important to coordinate with the asset owner should the patch be scheduled along its downtime. It is also important to have a test batch for patches. And if the batch was no good, you do not need to revert a lot of changes. It is crucial for projects to communicate well the limitations of the team. Agree on the KPI and if more manhours is needed, submit a Full Time Equivalent (FTE) Analysis.
