1 Understand your risk exposure

The first step to handle zero-day vulnerabilities and emergency patches is to understand your risk exposure. This means identifying and inventorying your assets, such as servers, applications, devices, and data, and assessing their value and sensitivity. You also need to monitor your network and systems for any signs of suspicious or anomalous activity, such as unusual traffic, connections, or behavior. The initial step should be to understand the vulnerability and identify the specific organizational asset that is causing it. It is recommended to conduct a Vulnerability Assessment and Penetration Testing (VAPT) exercise. Once a zero-day is identified, it's critical to contain the issue as quickly as possible. Try to implement a temporary measurement if no immediate patch is available. 1. Disable the vulnerable components, features, modules, or libraries. 2. Implement a more strict access control mechanism. 3. Implement proper network segmentation and isolation. 4. If the vulnerable part is a web application or part of the web application then try to install a WAF, so that it can minimize the attack.

Zero day vulnerabilities require a multi-disciplined approach to understand your exposure and overall risk. This includes identifying IOCs, closely monitoring vulnerable systems, and threat hunting. Mitigation efforts can include modifying system settings, running services, open ports, firewall rules, and/or installing emergency patches (if the patches are available).

2 Prioritize your actions

The next step is to prioritize your actions based on the severity and impact of the vulnerabilities and patches. You can use a vulnerability rating and prioritization system, such as the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS), to assign scores and levels to the vulnerabilities based on their exploitability, scope, and potential damage. You can also consider other factors, such as the availability and reliability of the patches, the likelihood and cost of exploitation, and the business impact and urgency of the affected assets. You should prioritize the most critical and high-risk vulnerabilities and patches, and allocate your resources and time accordingly.

CVSS is a good starting point, but an effective risk based TVM program should have multiple arrows in the quiver. Use the Exploit Prediction Scoring system to help prioritize patching requirements and incorporate threat feeds into your assessment. Most importantly, communicate and build relationships with the vulnerability owners. Understating the requirements of their tech stack and how vulnerabilities in those systems impact the wider business is critical to effective prioritization.

3 Test and deploy the patches

The third step is to test and deploy the patches in a safe and controlled manner. You should always test the patches in a sandbox or a staging environment before applying them to your production systems, to ensure that they do not cause any compatibility or performance issues, or introduce new vulnerabilities. You should also follow a patch management policy and procedure, such as the ITIL best practices, to document and track the patching process, communicate and coordinate with the stakeholders, and verify and validate the patch effectiveness. You should also backup your data and systems before applying the patches, in case of any errors or failures.

The final step is to review and improve your process for handling zero-day vulnerabilities and emergency patches. You should conduct a post-mortem analysis of the incident, to identify the root causes, the lessons learned, and the opportunities for improvement. You should also update your TVM process, policies, and tools, to incorporate the best practices, recommendations, and feedback from the incident. You should also conduct regular audits and reviews of your TVM process, to ensure that it is aligned with your organizational goals, compliance requirements, and industry standards.
