UAT testing is where reality meets expectations in software development/maintenance. I try to focus on setting realistic expectations early in the process. Make it clear that software development is not a 'cut & dried' process - Users and Developers have the best intentions for the Business but crafting the software will require compromises on both sides. An agile approach let's you reduce the 'Feedback Loop' and minimizes criteria misunderstandings. However, all sides must 'buy-in' and make time for the agile process to work. Beyond that, defining clear criteria requires the writer to spend time with the Business and fully understand the Business problem - There is no substitute for quality time spent with the stakeholders.
