How do you handle negative reviews of your digital publications?

Actually, when it comes to reviews listed on sites such as Amazon or Goodreads, I highly recommend that authors do not respond to negative reviews. Reviewers do not want to be called out on their opinion, and despite your good intentions could make you come off as petty and defensive. Negative reviews are never fun. Though it’s best to take note of the review, address any listed deficiencies that have merit for future versions, and move on. Not everyone is going to like your writing. Period. Spend the effort on creating and publishing the next piece for those audience members that do enjoy your work rather than focusing on those that don’t.

Can you turn around a negative to a positive? For example, you may have someone who complains that X company was given coverage, but their Y company did the same thing better, more profitably etc. Ok, would they like to be featured in the magazine? They say “Yes”. Y company does not advertise, but X company does. As a commercial publisher, we do prioritise editorials featuring advertisers. If Y advertise, it will show their suppprt of our title, and make it easier to report on their claimed better equipment or technology. If they agree to this, it’s a win-win and potentially the start of a longer successful working relationship with Y company.

All content is subjective, so it is not possible for every person to like a piece of work you have published. Universal approval is impossible. But it is very important to acknowledge the negative reviews and respond why you agree or disagree with their comments. This will assure the reviewer that you have put thought behind your publication and that you stand behind it. This will build authority for you in your domain of expertise while also being responsive and respectful to divergent opinions.

Negative reviews are sometimes the result of misunderstanding. I try to solve it sometimes. If that review really makes sense then I will make the improvements. If the review is rude/disturbing. Then we have 2 options:- 1. Strong Mindest:- A person like me doesn't care about negatives because the truth is you can not make everyone in this world happy with what you do. Focus on the people who love it and stay positive. 2. Take Action:- If it is harmful then report it. Simple!

In that case, take the review with a grain of salt. If you plan on making any alterations to your product based on a negative review, ensure the reviewer is a member of your target audience. For example, a reader who hates fiction is not going to be a reliable source of feedback on a fantasy novel. Or a first-time erotica reader who realizes they don't like intimate scenes... Filter the feedback.

Try to take it with a grain of salt which can be harder than one thinks. But by looking at it through the proverbial grain of salt, you see things from a various perspectives and can put what you have learned towards improving your digital content and possibly bringing a refreshed view to the work you do for the future.

You can't and don't have to fix everything that is in that feedback, but you should use it to see if and where improvements are possible.

Depending on the type of media you are, it could be best not to showcase positive reviews. You could come off as arrogant by patting yourself on the back. You audience will decide for themselves whether they think the content you make is worth their time.

Definitely monitoring can help improve our work. However, we also need to understand what kind of energy you are absorbing from the negative feedbacks. Its not necessary every negative feedback is from a valid person. Social media has given right to every other person to keep their views. Even when they don't have knowledge about the content they are commenting on. So we should monitor the feedbacks keeping in mind none of them affect you personally.

Keep the customers engaged in conversation about your publication, be polite, and try answering as many comments as possible; algorithms on all platforms love them, so use the buzz to your advantage!

Said it before, I'll say it again. You are NOT your digital publication content. You're an amalgam of thoughts, ideas, experiences, passions and so much more, it would be a shame to define your entire existence on what you craft alone. Also, there's a big difference between negative reviews and relevant critique - learn to distinguish between these and it will be far easier to move past the 'downers'.

It’s like walking on eggshells. Shakespeare’s to be or not to be takes form of “To do or not to do” when it comes to paying attention and replying to negative feedback online. I ask myself these 3 questions : 1) Who is the feedback coming from? A person I know. A person I don’t know. Another fellow writer commenting on my work or a random person on the internet? 2) What could be the intention of the reviewer? To make fun of my work? To have a quick laugh and forget about what they have written (Remove and report) Or to make my work better? 3) If the intent is to make my work better, and it is coming from a person I can rely on - I accept it and try to incorporate it in my future work. To growth and gratitude??

Rejection is part and parcel of our life. Take it in a positive mode, identify your mistakes. Then, work on improving the same paper by referring to literature on the relevant theme. Focus more on proofreading and then submit in other journal.

The occasional negative review is nothing to worry about. Most of the time they reveal a mindset that others can see as negative. If, however, there is any merit in what the reviewer says, we take it to heart and work to improve.

Could you try to find the practical elements you can learn and improve upon? Try to see as many as you can. If you find these points for improvement, you already know what to thank your reviewers for.

Allow yourself to absorb and learn. Take the criticism and work on it. But please remember, criticism should only come from spaces that you recognize having already established themselves to a respectable degree in the field of your interest. Not all criticism needs to be accepted and be accountable for. Pick and choose wisely.
