How do you handle constraints in solution architecture?

One compromise you should never make regardless of constraints is security. On the other end of the spectrum cost is a common constraint that can be readily addressed in cloud based solutions architectures. Costs can be reduced with a mix of resource commitments with a cloud vendor and with cost optimizing the cloud architecture itself.

In my experience, I’ve always found that identifying constraints are critical to the successful development and implementation of any architecture. The cloud landscape is surrounded by constraints. Bringing in the “Dive Deep” principle is something I leverage to identify constraints early in the design journey. Not all constraints are available at face value. Solutioning around these constraints is a skill that allows any architect to mitigate risks as they arise and drive results.

Navigating the labyrinth of solution architecture is an art of constraint juggling, and the first stroke is to identify and prioritize them. Envision constraints not as roadblocks but as sculptors shaping your masterpiece. As a solution architect, I've learned to embrace constraints not with resistance but with curiosity, viewing them as catalysts for innovation. Imagine each constraint as a puzzle piece, contributing to the unique mosaic of your design. Prioritize them not just by urgency but by the narrative they add to your architectural story. It's not about circumventing limitations; it's about turning them into design principles.

? Firstly, Identify the constraints: Limitations in hardware, software, or network. ? Evaluate the impact: Assessing the feasibility of the solution, identifying potential risks, and determining any trade-offs that need to be made. ? Consult the SMEs: Seek input from experts who can help identify potential solutions and workarounds. ? Explore alternative solutions: That may be feasible given the technical constraints. Like, considering different technologies, architectures, or deployment models. ? Perform trade-off analysis: With pros and cons, document all decisions and rationale. ? Constant feedback and Evaluation: Keep reassessing constraints throughout the design process and adjust for feasibility and effectiveness over time as needed.

Constraints are a form of requirements. Identify the risks associated with them, estimate the impact, provide a relative priority or significance, and provision for the same in solution design. For example, file size is a constraint. Identify the events by extrapolating the current size and growth rate. If the constraints could be met in relatively short timeframe, then you design for splitting and processing. Constraints could be business related, technology related or for operations. So, not focus on only technical constraints.

In the cases where we have multiple stakeholders and have various design options it is good to put out on paper or confluence on rationale, justification for the design decisions, Implications, pros and cons along with alignment with business, UX , Architecture and design standards.

The most important aspect of solution architecture communication is to create a visualisation of possible options to stakeholders.

When negotiating solution architecture constraints it's important to be able to show use cases and case studies. This provides credibility to your approach and can alleviate concerns. Whenever possible, quantify the impact of use cases by either addressing or not addressing a particular constraint. For instance, "By complying with this constraint, we expect a 30% higher customer satisfaction."

Communication is always the first key to discuss and negotiate the constraints. The Architectural solution provided an Expert would need to look key steps for upscaling, resolving current pain points and ensure there is no any limitations to mitigate the risk and dependencies. Constraints in the Architecture can be handle by different architecture patterns with corresponding trade-offs for Agility, Deployment, Testability, Performance, Scalability and Development.

Using technologies that follow industry defacto standards can be a huge help to ensure whatever is implemented today, doesn't become tomorrow's constraint. Not only do technologies change over time, but so do the people making technology decisions. Implementing new technologies will easily integrate if standards are followed and the solutions are open in their design.

Understanding the business requirements are essential as this will be your foundation. The pain points and current issues are your tools to shape the solution to mitigate these, but you can also use this opportunity to press harder on how your offering will alleviate their concerns as well as clear any misconceptions, especially in my industry. The final piece, in my eyes, is support. Making sure the client doesn't feel alone is key. It can be a simple discussion around on-going support i.e. CS, Tech Support and even you personally - emphasising that your offering WILL work for them. Of course, nothing will progress without approval, so supporting your champion in winning over the decision makers should be part of your support discussion.

Some methods mentioned here to identify them but shouldn't be restricted to this. I think there is a need to prioritise by phase of delivery. At the point of selection the priority will be different to when we get to implementation and post implementation. To prioritise it once, we would not be set up to win. For example, reference data (IT system) needs to be understood at a category and structure level to select an appropriate solution, at the build phase there needs to be coverage across the business, at implementation there needs to be a full and complete set. All of these can be blockers but the maturity of the constraint has changed over the journey

As a Solutions Architect, it's crucial to be adaptable, especially when overseeing multi-million dollar projects. I find it beneficial to present mockups or prototypes to stakeholders. This allows them to visualize the end result and makes it simpler to pinpoint potential challenges or concerns ahead of time.

Adapting and optimizing constraints in real-time large enterprise use cases involves tailoring solutions to unique business challenges. For example, in a financial institution, we can optimize for low-latency trading by leveraging high-performance computing and minimizing network latency. In healthcare, data security and compliance constraints are paramount, so we'd focus on robust encryption and access controls. Each enterprise context demands tailored solutions that align with constraints while delivering optimal performance and value.

As with the ever-changing IT landscape that would impact an architecture defined at a certain point in time (ex: cloud computing, IoT, AI, blockchain, web3), architectural constraints are no different (ex: budget, data privacy laws, sustainability/green IT targets, edge processing, network, platform limitations) – we can never predict or cater for 100% of constraints upfront in an architecture. Emphasis would then be on having a robust framework in place to detect, triage, prioritize and handle constraints continuously. It's analogous to how project RAIDs are managed. An architect needs to keep their finger on the pulse; manage, maintain, find solutions, pull in SMEs where necessary and communicate with stakeholders timely and purposefully.

You should think about all the use cases of your future system and analyse what constraints can appear. If you face new constraints on implementation stage - you didn't analyse well enough. But when you see new unknown constraint - investigate its source. Maybe something really differs from the perspective that you was in at the start.

In my opinion, as a solution architect we know there potential failure points or constraints that we may face. We must have the plan B or alternative to overcome constraints. There must be some agility when it comes to addressing the constraints at every phase of the solution architecture. Planning for identification,documentation, prioritization, review, communication of the constraints must be done well in advance by identifying stakeholders.

From my experience as a solutions architect, after setting up a solution, it's crucial to consistently watch for any issues or limitations. I've always emphasized having a solid plan detailing who's responsible for what and setting guidelines on tackling these challenges. It's essential to regularly check the progress and ensure that the solutions align with the identified challenges. And if any new hurdles pop up or if there are changes during the process, I'm always on my toes, ready to handle them.

I think the main solution architecture constraints are basically: budget, time to market, resource availability and compliance requirements. Budget factors in the financial resource to either build or buy the resource to satisfy the requirements of the solution architecture, along with the support cost. Time to market is the temporal constraint to deliver the solution architecture within a specific timeframe, other systems down the pipeline can and will depend on this delivery. Resource availability covers the tools, platforms, technologies that will be either built or bought and talents to harness them to deliver the expected benefit. Compliance requirements are industry-specific standards to be followed for minimum acceptance criteria.

What really matters is the technical result. If you have earned the result by metrics and more important meaning - the feedback doesn't matter. Feedback can be emotional, the users can be still unfamiliar with the new system. But be honest with yourself - is the goal achieved? If yes - the job was done well

Learning and improving from constraints is integral to solution architecture. Use cases illustrate its value: Resource Scaling: A web service faces constraints during peak traffic. Using performance data, it scales resources dynamically, ensuring consistent service quality and customer retention. Cost Optimization: Cloud infrastructure costs exceed budgets. By monitoring resource utilization, the architecture optimizes resource allocation, reducing operational expenses. Data Processing Delays: A data analytics platform experiences delays. Learning from past bottlenecks, it refines data processing pipelines, enabling faster insights for users.

End of project concentrate on what worked and who, do not go into the desolate area of what did not, you cannot learn from what did not work.

Once the solution is designed catering to the constraints, based on the learning and solutions created for the constraints following things can be produced for reusability and manage the constraints effectively -reusable patterns -generalization -standardization -adaptable frameworks

Typicall we do this after feature release. The team will do a retrospection. This way we as a team learn what needs to be done if theres some problem occur. As The Solutions Architect we collect data and use it for our next release

It is often claimed, and proven in Solution Architecture related topics, that from hardship and new challenges come the best design and innovative patterns. How often do we use the term 'disruptive' with a positive connotation? How often do we relate it to inventiveness, innovation, the drive to break out of the box, which is the real driver of progress? I say from my personal experience, that constraints are useful as we must be willing to face them, marvelling at finding solutions we would never have thought of, using a methodical and linear approach.

The prospect of designing a new solution to solve a business problem or a technological transformation is always a challenge to live for and the listing of constraints dampen that excitement as it may hold down the usage of the latest and greatest technologies. Try conducting widespread workshops with all possible stakeholders (product managers, business developers, infrastructure, customer support, regulatory etc.) and encouraging them to speculate the constraints from their own area of expertise. Identification of constraints is not really a blocker to any ambitions of finding the best solution but should be rather treated as an early and essential reality check. It prevents major setbacks and opens up minds to become pragmatic.

In our architecture implementation, We should add the following solutions in technical design. 1. auto-recovery of the application if something goes wrong. 2. Zero down time to avoid the impact on user's activities during application deployments. 3. Tracking the user activities to understand their behaviors and usage. 4. Strong alert and notification system to avoid any glitches. From the Process point of view, 1. The progress metrics should be captured frequently. 2. The Roadmap should be tracked fortnightly or as per the project need. 3. Priorities should be documented and covey to all the stackholders.

Additionally, I leverage my experience to identify creative solutions that optimize resource utilization and ensure scalability, all while adhering to the constraints. By continuously monitoring and adapting the architecture throughout the project's lifecycle, I strive to deliver a robust and efficient solution that not only meets its constraints but also enhances the organization's capabilities and competitiveness.

From my experience architecture is not a one-time activity. As the project progresses, continue to assess and refine the architecture as needed, considering the evolving constraints. Regularly review the constraints and the architecture to ensure they remain aligned. Be prepared to adapt and make changes as necessary. So continously assessments, Review and remain aligned is the key

Iterate and Adapt: Solution architecture is not static. It may evolve over time as constraints change or new information becomes available. Be prepared to iterate on your design to adapt to evolving constraints and requirements.

Understand Business Goals: Have a clear understanding of the business goals and objectives that the solution is meant to achieve. This will help you make informed decisions when addressing constraints without compromising the business objectives. Evaluate Trade-offs: In many cases, you will need to make trade-offs to accommodate constraints. For example, if there's a budget constraint, you may need to choose cost-effective technologies even if they are less feature-rich. Evaluate the trade-offs carefully and communicate the implications to stakeholders.
