To break through the noise of a complex work environment, lead with authenticity and trust. The most important thing you can do is understand your own purpose first. If you do not understand where you fit into the ecosystem, you will not be able to understand how to navigate it. Start by defining your values. There are a number of ways to do this either through a coach, a system or a online format. I actually built my own value proposition. Remember you do not have to be a single-issue world changer. You can be like me who has a purpose built around a defining characteristic - such as kindness and love that permeates all else.

Yes, but be choosy about whom you take feedback from and what you do with it. Remember it is your choice to solicit feedback, to embrace feedback and to incorporate it into your growth. Not all feedback is good feedback. Take what you need. Learn from successes and opportunities. Be open and curious but be cautious.

This is sage advice. In a world that is noisy...and we have lots of problems and requests coming at us all day long...funders often hear how lucky they are to have the job they have. That does not mean you that you don't also have the same emotions and pain that need to be managed and you don't also feel the pain of the world. Many funders have become part of this work because they want to make the world a better place and have hearts that want to see change - so they too need to find the space and solace when big things happen and when facing many grantees all telling them world is falling apart all day long - to grieve. You can't lead others, if you can't lead yourself. Mind, body and soul.

Being open to change is of uttermost importance because that will allow you to be receptive to ideas and try different aspects of doing the same thing. However, it is important to flow top down otherwise your views are always lost and not supported.

When making decisions under uncertainty I think you need to base your choices on some core, consistent principles. For example, say you’re a business owner and one core principle is “learning over earning”. You have a new customer opportunity and you can decide whether to engage with it using this as one principle (ideally you would have several). Maybe you take that opportunity and in time you start to resent the work. You can reflect back on the point you made the decision and look at if you didn’t follow that core principle. Having these principles enables some consistency in decision making under uncertainty, which should maximise your opportunity to achieve your goals.
