How do you get feedback on your signposts and summaries from your peers or mentors?

Giving feedback to peers also helps to improve your own skills. It is generally easier to recognize weaknesses in the work of others. However, once you "see" a weakness in someone else's work you may also recognize that you are subject to the same weakness. This is true for presentations and writing and why peer review is so important.

As we discuss feedback for speakers, one thing to keep in mind is that often our friends and colleagues are reluctant to offer real criticism. For many people, public speaking takes real courage, and they don't want others to get discouraged. We've all had the "that was great" and pro forma back slaps when we know we could have done better. Sometimes you have to tell people you WANT real feedback.

As much as we don't want to hear feedback, it's the only way we can improve, identify blind spots, and boost confidence. Remember to be open to feedback, reflect on it, and take actionable steps to make positive changes in your public speaking. You can't please everyone but you can start to notice trends...

Feedback can come from, ‘Can I get a copy of your presentation;’ to ‘Interesting points, yet what about…?’ The later offers insight from a varying perspective, which should always be welcome.

Sometimes, the most useful feedback is the kind we like the least. Use criticism as whetstone to sharpen yourself as a speaker.

One technique that always works is being respectful. There are tons of posts people are reading, but the fact that they took time to read and comment means they want to share their feedback and being respectful to others views is a good sign for healthy dialog.

I agree; the most important thing you can do to prompt future feedback is to reply to ALL input and comments, thanking them and even starting another conversation about their point (s).

Ask for feedback. Always remember the worst that can happen is that someone will say no. When asking for feedback, be clear on your ask and why you’re asking. When they have given feedback then thank them and show them appreciation.

You don't want people to just hype you up and say you are the best. Ask for HONEST constructive feedback, and be specific on what you want feedback on. And remember to ask multiple people for feedback, where it is audience members, mentors, or peers.

While online tools can offer some benefits for public speaking, there are also potential disadvantages. Here are some cons to consider: Technical difficulties Limited non-verbal communication Distractions Lack of physical presence Reduced audience interaction Accessibility issues

Simple way: Use the voice memos app on your smartphone. More complex way: Record using Zoom or Loom. Deliver your speech while being mindful of your tone, pace, volume, and body language. Pay attention to your gestures, facial expressions, and eye contact with the imaginary audience or the camera. Practice multiple times to gain confidence and familiarity with your content.

I would add to take all feedback with 'a grain of salt'. Often times I will ask for feedback from folks that are not experienced with my industry, for outside perspective. It can be great to expand the topic to other audiences, but you should know your audience better than anyone. Some feedback may not be as helpful, because the person giving the feedback may not have the experience (especially if they are not in your field of expertise).

What to do with feedback: 1. Authorize it. Provide a safe and healthy environment and welcome it. 2. Analyze it. Is it coming from a healthy place, a trusted source? Is it thoughtful? Is it honest? 3. Apply it. Use it to improve yourself, your content, and your delivery.

Most people forget prioritizing feedback. Not all feedback may be relevant or feasible to apply immediately. Prioritize the feedback based on its relevance to your goals, the source of the feedback, and your own assessment of its importance.
