If you plan to use your 3D printer to make functional prototypes, calibration is more important than for aesthetic 3D printing work, because tolerances need to be managed to ensure parts fit together well. Keep in mind that even things like layer height changes to reduce printing time can affect tolerances to the extent that parts won't go together well or at all. Where possible find a printer that stays well calibrated over many prints, instead of buying a lower cost printer, only to find out that it needs constant tweaking and adjustments because the printer is constructed for low cost instead of reliability.

Depending on the print engine and material, one might also need to consider right site facility preparation and humidity + climate control for stabilization of the print process as to try to reduce variables.
