How do you genuinely network without pretending?

Break the ice and create genuine connections by going beyond surface-level interactions and creating shared experiences. People appreciate when you take a real interest in their lives. Ask open-ended questions that encourage them to share about themselves. Rather than sticking to generic topics, delve into subjects they are passionate about. While it’s good to seek a deeper connection, it’s also important to respect personal and professional boundaries. Pay attention to cues that the other person might want to keep the conversation light or professional.

My take on this is that curiosity isn't just about asking questions. It's about being open-minded, being intrigued by new and different ideas, and truly understanding situations and people. It's about suspending our own opinions and conclusions to thoughtfully consider those of others. This curiosity can also help us in difficult conversations. It can help us stay open, humble, and willing to learn. It's like a tool hiding in plain sight that can help maintain and fix relationships. But, it's not always easy. Being curious also means being somewhat vulnerable, because it requires us to surrender to a level uncertainty. We have to admit that we don't know everything, and sometimes, that can lead to discomfort.

I wholeheartedly support the approach of genuine curiosity in networking. Showing sincere interest in others by asking meaningful questions and actively listening creates a foundation for meaningful connections. This approach goes beyond superficial interactions, allowing you to understand the person's stories, challenges, goals, and passions. Active listening and empathetic engagement not only foster rapport but also enable you to learn from their insights and experiences. By demonstrating genuine curiosity, you convey respect and care for the individual, which can lead to deeper, more meaningful professional relationships over time. This approach not only enriches your networking experience but also opens doors to new perspectives.

That is why we spend so much time and effort networking. A recommendation here, an introduction there; opens more doors than sending out emails and cold calling. There is no benefit in pretending. If you cannot do this right, you will not be trusted with the higher functions of management. To network effectively, you need to be somewhat of a known quality. You must be seen to be able to give something to a network. You have to give to receive. Otherwise, you are just another name card, another name, another face. This requires you to be genuine. It shows you care about what they have to say, and that's the foundation of any solid relationship.

Be a friend. The best advice i ever got from my mentor was approach like a friend, not a business deal. Attending networking events comes with a lot of vulnerability - it's sometimes easier to pretend to be someone you're not rather than show your authentic self for the fear of being rejected. It's important to get comfortable with the feeling of vulnerability as it leads to so many wonderful, authentic connections. When we're vulnerable we're human - and networking always comes back to human connection.

There is always something you can connect with a person about and finding that out is always a goal of mine. It doesn’t have to be strictly job or career related either; it could be hobbies, pets, family, etc. Discovering something they are genuinely excited about and showing genuine interest will spark a connection.
