How do you foster a culture of innovation and collaboration in your team?

Many tend to think innovation is about having creative ideas but in my experience, the most critical first step for having a culture of innovation in any organization is to have a clearly articulated ambition for innovation which is aligned with the organization vision. Only then people can truly pursue creative ideas which actually matter.

Recognize and reward innovation. Recognize and reward your employees’ innovative efforts. Celebrate their successes, no matter how small, and acknowledge their contributions to the company’s overall growth and success. Foster a diverse and include workplace. A diverse and inclusive workplace fosters a culture of innovation by bringing together different perspectives, ideas, and experiences. Encourage diversity and inclusion in hiring, promotions, and team assignments. Embrace new technologies. Embrace new technologies and tools that can help your employees be more productive, efficient, and innovative. Encourage experimentation with new technologies and provide the necessary resources and support.

A purpose is a statement that describes why your organisation exists and the impact it wants to make (beyond making profit). A vision is a picture in words of what the future might look like with your purpose fulfilled. While purpose statements are usually enduring, vision statements can be time-stamped. i.e. you can have a vision of the future 6 months from now, a year from now, 10 years from now, 100 years from now, etc. Together, clear purpose and vision statements help foster innovation and collaboration by providing common language to enhance communication, aligning team goals, guiding decision-making, promoting targeted risk-taking and creating a sense of belonging.

I always advocate for following the PO3 storyline for innovation. P stands for Purpose, O for Objective, O for Output, and O for Outcome. Purpose addresses the "why," Objective tackles the "what," Output outlines tangible, measurable specifics, while Outcome focuses on intangible aspects such as collaboration and relevant achievements, yet still quantifiable.

As a leader, continuous learning is a lifetime process and it should be encourage in a workplace. Organize training and development that aligns with the organization's growth. This improves the curiosity and eagerness to implement innovatively to drive change in the organization.

A study conducted on," Curious Learners" has shown employee response as,"Not many organisations are curious about what we do.We need to do whatever the manager tells us to do" Confucius,"Choose a job you love and you will never work a day in your life" When it comes to learning, we might rephrase that:"Identify what you are passionate about and it will be a constant source of enjoyable learning" Teaching and allowing others to teach you is a highly rewarding activity which has been put into practical application by Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam till the last moment of his life Try to identify the ways you have practised your best skill and see if you can apply them to other aspects of your life Boost your brain's function by exercising

The best way to encourage Curiosity and Learning is by doing it yourself. You can not fake it. Staying informed about the latest trends in your industry and sharing the insights with your team can motivate and inspire them to find more information and learn. Always be at the forefront in demonstrating your willingness and ability to learn.

In an open, motivating and no blame culture, I have seen people perform to the best of their common/unique abilities.

So, I make it a point to give my team the space to take ownership of their projects. I encourage them to experiment, take calculated risks, and not be afraid of failure—because that's where true innovation happens. Mistakes are part of the process, and as long as we’re learning from them, we're moving forward. At the same time, collaboration is key. I focus on building an environment where open communication is the norm and everyone feels comfortable sharing ideas, no matter their role. When people know their opinions are valued and respected, they’re more willing to bring creative solutions to the table.

You can empower trust in a very simple way: create transparency. The more transparent your operation is, the higher the trust you have. People tend to follow processes that they are aware of, we get familiar with what we know. Transparency brings in clarity which allows autonomy, indirect trust.

Embracing diverse perspectives is a superpower for any team. We can win over: 1. Blind Spots Become Beacons: We all have them - those hidden biases or limited experiences that can cloud our judgment. When we include people from different backgrounds, they can point out these blind spots, leading to a more well-rounded understanding of the situation. 2. Stronger Decisions, together: With diverse perspectives, the team can explore the issue from multiple angles, leading to more informed and effective decisions.

Oftentimes, it's the small, thoughtful acts, consistently performed, that create the ecosystem for innovation and inclusion. Take, for example, meeting dynamics. While we aim to have all voices contribute, research shows that in a group of 8, 3 people speak 67% of the time. Thus, intentional practices, done regularly, to hear from everyone, can spark opportunities for innovative collaborations. Round robins. Assigning roles like pros/cons. Keeping open a document for continued collaboration between meetings. All of these small acts can add up to big wins for inclusion and innovation.

While diversity is really valuable, it's also crucial for team members to share a common set of values and goals. I believe, an overly diverse team without a unifying culture may face challenges in terms of alignment and cohesion. Therefore, alongside diversity, there should also be a focus on developing cross-cultural competence within teams to ensure that members can navigate and appreciate each other's cultural nuances. I would also profess balancing Inclusion with meritocracy so that the individuals are recognized, rewarded, and promoted based on their skills, competencies, and contributions.

They key to create a culture of creativity and innovation in an organisation is to create a coaching culture. When -leaders show up as coaches & - employees feel psychologically safe It creates a shift in the kind of conversations that take place in an organisation which allows executives to explore ideas they haven't dared to before.

The best way to improve communication is to use 'playback'. 'Playback' is where the receiver plays back their understanding of what is being communicated. It's important to understand that the sender of the information is responsible for the clarity of the message, so if the receiver doesn't fully understand, it's not the receiver's fault. Example: The sender says something complicated and then 2 scenarios follow: Scenario 1: the sender can then say "I'm not sure if I managed to explain that very well. Could someone have a go at playing back your understanding?" Scenario 2: the receiver says "This is what I think you're saying...<insert playback>" Both scenarios give the chance to correct any misunderstandings.

Feedback is Continuous Learning! While not everyone enjoys receiving feedback and not ever single session is primarily positive, it is extremely important that we provide feedback moments if we are to grow and develop. In my experience, tough love is a dynamic way to communicate the strengths and opportunities in a person, team, or organization. The most important piece to this is how the leader facilitates the feedback to ensure the downward effects are always to move forward and to perform at higher and exceptional levels.

An open and transparent system will always foster constructive and insightful feedback and contributions without fear of criticism.
