Using DFM practices, businesses can spot and solve potential manufacturing problems during the design phase, instead of dealing with them later in production. This approach helps save money, improve product quality, and get products to market faster.

I find it helpful to always stress the importance of manufacturability from the earliest phase of design. It is easy to get close to production only to find a flaw that makes manufacturing expensive or, worse, impossible. For a culture of product development that is not accustomed to considering manufacture upfront, it is best to have some manufacturing experts on the design team involved from the very beginning, possibly in the approval chain of development and release. After a long time working together, development engineers will absorb the lessons from the manufacturing experts and get closer to the mark faster in their next design.

Couldn't agree more. As the saying goes, "if you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always gotten." So, to enable a team to successfully achieve new and greater deliverables, it's important to set challenging expectations and provide skill development opportunities as "just in time" as possible. That training should be applications-oriented ... apply what's being taught immediately on parts of the active project so that cashable benefits are achieved simultaneous with the training.

You just hire for designers professionals who graduated from manufacturing departments of engineering school where they were taught the theories and best practices of multiple manufacturing technologies, material science, DFM for those technologies and tooling design. Real manufacturing professionals rather than self-taught doers who were learning from other self-taught ones.

Effective DFM team cultures put extra effort into prototype building early and often, capturing manufacturability metrics with each build. Each build provides the opportunity to be better than the last through creative re-design. Great DFM team cultures keep a few slightly unrealistic & audacious goals to strive for. These goals are only impossible until someone proves otherwise! However, sometimes these goals are best kept internal (secrete) from upper management... ??

Great DFM culture is all about "high fives" for awesome designs! ?? Furthermore, recognizing and "high fiving" awesome DFM efforts does far more to accelerate DFM than raising "red flags" for lack of DFM. When evaluating new designs, even if a new design feature was not intended for DFM purposes, one must never pass up the opportunity to "high five" the designer and point out why their design is great for manufacturability!
