How do you foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement in your organization?

In my experience , Lean thinking starts with your customer need analysis and deliver small incremental iterations to validate and adapt as per customer feedback on a continuous improvement journey to add customer value throughout the entire engagement cycle!!!

A meaningful way to understand Lean Thinking is to have a conversation about the five principles behind it. For example, you can start with your team by identifying the value you deliver to your customers, this is the zero point of everything. Then you go to understand the "process" that makes that value appear using your preferred tool (SIPOC, VSM, High-Level Map, etc). With this "map" you can identify the main wastes in order to keep lean your process. Then you make "flow" by implementing clear actions and generating agreement between all stakeholders. Finally, you keep conversations about how the team is learning and seek for better performance, it is an infinite game in which excellence never ends.

Lean thinking is not just about eliminating waste, but also about creating a culture of continuous learning and improvement. It's about fostering an environment where everyone is encouraged to identify and eliminate non-value adding activities, and to constantly look for ways to streamline and simplify processes. This mindset, when ingrained in the organization's culture, can lead to significant improvements in efficiency, productivity, and customer satisfaction.

Lean as it relates to many definitions is about eliminating waste and create more value for the customer. More contemporary Lean thinkers would view lean as respect for people. It is not just about eliminating waste, but also about empowering employees at all levels to identify and solve problems, thereby creating a culture of continuous improvement. We want to emphasize the importance on frontline workers being engaged in the process of optimizing the work and leveraging their insights to streamline workflows and enhance value. The culture needs to become lean thinkers not just the leaders and the metrics.

Lean principles are fundamentally focused on reducing waste and optimizing processes and their perspective allows teams to continuously evaluate and improve their performance. Kaizen practices encourage employees to make processes more efficient by making small but continuous improvements. Lean thinking supports employees to look deeper into business processes and identify real problems by performing root cause analyses. Lean methodology creates continuous feedback loops which increase learning opportunities and encourage knowledge sharing at all levels of the organization.

Behind Lean you will find a system that enables people to learn about how to observe and solve problems in their context. For example, 5s will teach you different kinds of waste (see Tim Wood acronym) and how to use the power of standardization to eliminate them. PDCA Cycle will give you a framework to have a structure in order to build a solution. All these tools enable "psychological safety" because your team has the confidence to solve the problems they have.

Lean thinking not only promotes a culture of continuous learning and improvement, but it also instills a mindset of proactive problem-solving. By encouraging teams to test assumptions and learn from failures, organizations can foster a culture of innovation and resilience. Furthermore, the regular involvement of customers, employees, and stakeholders in the improvement process ensures that solutions are well-rounded and effective. I've seen firsthand how this lean thinking approach can lead to significant efficiency gains and cost savings.

By promoting a culture of problem solving -increasing value- reducing waste. If individuals have the freedom of continuous experimentation and receive/share feedback - The org/team is on the path of lean thinking philosophy.

A culture of continuous learning and improvement, underpinned by lean thinking is essential for any organization that wants to be around for the long run. It's not just about reducing waste or improving efficiency, it's about fostering a culture of empowerment and ownership that motivates employees and drives innovation. As a result, organizations can deliver better products and services, exceed customer expectations, and discover new opportunities for growth.

I think one of the main benefits is "team engagement". Nowadays the main waste we have in companies is related to the productivity of knowledge workers, these tools, and the mindset behind them will allow us to be competitive in the new age of Artificial Intelligence. If we look at the past, we can find that the use of Lean has already given a lot of productivity in the last century (Toyota, PepsiCo, Bimbo, and so on).

Start by identifying an influential leader who will champion the implementation of lean thinking and the related organizational change-management effort. Ensure that executive champion is willing to be more than just a "voice at the top" supporting lean. They should also ensure adequate time and funding to train the entire organization on lean thinking (everyone must embrace the culture change for it to be successful) and on how to use the various tools in the lean "toolkit". They should also "lead from the front" by actively participating in multiple lean events such as kaizen and value stream mapping exercises as part of the team. Their participation in those events will be a powerful change agent for the implementation of lean thinking!

It is important to have the involvement of senior leadership, sometimes you can advance so quickly if you start bottom-up strategy but when you are trying to make long-term changes it is better to go slow with people and that means having top-down guidelines. Always have in mind that you are managing changes, so I would recommend using methodologies like ADKAR, and Lewin′s change management model. There are many, just find which one works best for your organization.

Here you can use a framework that shows the maturity of the transformation. There are models from Lean Institute Network, McKinsey, and Shingeo Institute that could help you to understand your baseline and have a long-term plan to sustain Lean in your company.

As someone who has been working as a lean coordinator for many years, I can clearly say that the lean perspective should not only be in a department or production. Employees and especially managers in a wide range of departments, from HR to purchasing, should have this perspective. In order to lean thinking to spread, managers must provide leadership and inform employees accordingly. Considering all factors, with the active participation of employees, lean thinking creates a permanent culture of learning and improvement in your organization.
