Always a warm thank you. If there’s been conversation during the development of the proposal I ask the funder if they would like updates on our progress and /or activities prior to submitting the proposal. Some funders don’t want contact while a proposal is being considered but welcome it afterwards whether it’s funded or it. Building the relationship is the goal. Some funders just want updates in the form of the report :).

2 Follow the funder's guidelines

Place these important dates and methods of preferred communication on you calnder so you can follow up and check in as needed. Creating templates before hand can always be helpful in being proactive.

It's important to "listen" to what potential funders say they want in terms of communications. I wouldn't begin sending funders updates - even if I think they're relevant - without asking. This can happen at a site visit if your request progresses that far. Alternatively, if you attend a conference and meet a foundation staffer you can also ask if the vibe feels conducive. However, once a relationship is established and you know their communication preferences inviting funders to events and actions is really critical to relationship building beyond when it's time to request funds. Many program officers have a lot of expertise and relationships/networks that they can share and many will if there's a relationship and you ask them

One of the most valuable things you can do to follow up and maintain relationships with funders after submitting your grant proposal is to ask for feedback and advice. Whether you get funded or not, you can learn a lot from the funder's perspective and experience.
