How do you follow up with candidates after a phone interview?

Whenever possible, I like to get the candidate's feedback about how the interview went, before talking to the hiring manager or interviewer about it. This allows me to serve the candidate's best interest, while working to fill my clients role. This leads to a positive experience for the candidate which leads to a positive public opinion about the interview process at your company. This is one key to attracting the kind of talent you need to hire.

An additional question to ask would be why they are interested in joining your organization and/or why they are interested in a particular opportunity.

The key here is to give meaningful feedback with a level of effort appropriate for the volume of candidates. My guiding principle is that all candidates deserve feedback, but there are genuine operational constraints. If you have 100 people at stage 1, then it's silly to suggest calling them all. Likewise if you have 10 screens at round 2. I'd suggest using something like Airtable / your ATS to label candidates with a reason for rejection and then using templates that explain that reason for rejection. It's meaningful because it is the reason you rejected them, but it's efficient because the actual text is templated.
