How do you fix tech issues when teaching?

Personally these are are some issues which we regularly face in our classrooms: Speakers not working or slow network connection due to which video keeps on buffering YES! It’s a damper cause I may have planned a certain flow to my topic but … What works for me is: 1.keeping flexibility in our lesson plan 2.having a quick save solution to the situation, like group activities which has the students super engaged and energised 3. Have plan B like sharing the file with a student rep in advance, putting it on Google classroom apart from having a backup copy of your files for device related troubles. A pen drive never fails.

The personal touch is paramount when working with graduate students particularly. A phone call or text to empathize when a technical problem disrupts instruction is essential. A graduate student is a budding scholar in the best tradition of education. Professor. If not them. Then who?

Addressing tech issues during teaching necessitates a blend of preparation and real-time problem-solving. Prior to sessions, I ensure all systems, software, and hardware are functioning correctly. Despite prep, issues may arise. In such cases, I have a basic troubleshooting checklist to quickly identify common problems. If an issue persists, I consult technical support or seek help from knowledgeable colleagues. Additionally, I maintain a list of reliable alternatives to pivot to, ensuring teaching continues uninterrupted. It's essential to stay calm, inform students about the issue, and keep them engaged while resolving the problem. Continuous learning and adapting to new tech advancements is also key to mitigating future tech challenges.

When confronting technical issues during teaching, it's always practical to have a contingency plan in place. Using a A3 large paper and pencils you can quickly group your students together and share thinking routines for them to discuss and express their current understanding of the task at hand. This setup requires minimal material and can be implemented in less than 5 minutes.

Don't get nervous while waiting for the restart! Use that time instead as a break to share some joke, or invite the class to share their doubts or considerations it is always good to give some pause to the brain in order to fix the information received, so these "restart" breaks can be useful also for learning

When tech acts up, hit the refresh or reboot button. This quick fix can kick out any bugs or clutter slowing things down. Video wonky or audio out of whack? A quick browser refresh or app restart might do the trick. If your device is dragging or just acting weird, a good old-fashioned power cycle could clear the air. It's not a cure-all, but it's a solid first step.

In an online presentation on digital identity, I couldn't connect my audio to the video conference platform. After testing everything possible in my computer's system settings, I told the organizer via chat that I was going to turn off my computer and try the connection again - which worked in time and didn't affect the presentation time of the content I was going to present.

I have a habit of arriving at my classroom well before students arrive and setting up the technology needed for the day. There have been numerous times when the SmartBoard isn't calibrated, or the interactive activities I had prepared are no longer accessible to students, or the classroom audio is not functioning. I am always able to resolve these issues rather quickly on my own. Seek Help: If the issue persists, consider involving IT support or reaching out to colleagues for assistance.

For long term success, develop a positive relationship with your IT support. Be sure to report issues. They can’t fix what they don’t know about. If there is software or hardware that you need, have a conversation about it. They can be an asset to you.

The first question you should ask yourself before updating or upgrading is: - Is the system working properly? is there any specific need this update/upgrade have to fix? - Second question is: is there any urgent and/or important task that I have to accomplish? If this last question is YES and the first is NO, then don't upgrade. Before starting a process that can give rise to problems, end your duties. And prepare a plan B in any case to keep your productivity going in case the update/upgrade ends in a major system crash

I wanted to present a keynote, and everything worked fine the day before. Next morning, all equipment did work, however my keynote didn't show. Tried everything, contact IT; all troubleshooting was repeated, nothing changed. Since I prepared well, I was able to do it without, but when I wanted to show a picture of my cat, a student came forward, wiggled the adapter a bit and my cat appeared. He smiled and sang: wiggle it, just a little bit :) Lesson learned and now this song pops in my head everytime I can't project my presentation.

Most of the time spent with the IT support is to communicate properly and try to make them understanding the issue. Be prepared with the relevant info the IT is needing to analyze in order to identify the problem. Reading a proper guide or troubleshoot can prepare you to collect all the info to send to the support. Be aware that the person trying to support you have to rule out many possible known causes in order to exclude wrong solutions. Patience and effort to communicate the right information are the crucial factors.

I try to find out who the tech "gurus" are on a given school site and keep up with when their planning periods are just in case I need them. Also, in any given classroom of third grade or above, there are usually one or two students who are great at tech trouble-shooting. Use them! And if you find a student who is really good at tech support, don't be afraid to ask for them to help during a break. It gives them an opportunity to shine and you fix a problem.

Ask for the Boombox: A touch of humor can defuse tension. If it comes naturally, joke about how even the best of us experience tech issues and ask for help. More often than not, there's a tech guru among your students. Just yesterday, a student's Bluetooth speaker saved the day when my laptop wouldn't connect to the classroom audio system. Just as we cannot control the weather, we often have little control over AV malfunctions. My go-to solution for handling a malfunctioning AV system has been to revert to the trusty whiteboard.

As educators, our response to setbacks, especially tech glitches, sets the tone for our students. During my teaching license observation, my computer chose the perfect time to restart for updates. But did that halt the lesson? No. I trusted my knowledge, the rapport I'd built with my students, and our shared objective. We navigated through the hiccup, finding an alternative path to our destination. Be the example. Show resilience. Emphasize that setbacks are merely opportunities to discover new routes to success. In the classroom and beyond, it's not about your planned journey but how you adapt when the route changes.

Many years ago I had technology issues doing an observation but I prepared as if it might happen and everything went smoothly. It's important to be ready and stay ready for any situations that might occur. Often there are internet issues so not being prepared will not be viable. Being flexible, innovative, and creative is significant in the process.

I would add "be transparent" to the suggestion to be flexible, created, and prepared. If something is going wrong, admitting it to the class can be very humanizing. Everyone faces problems sometimes, and modeling how to handle challenges with grace can be a wonderful thing to teach. As a STEM educator, I would add that transparency with tech issues also helps teachers model how to approach problems in a systematic way and can be an entry point for student ideas and discussion.

Perhaps one thing that will help us have perspective is to remember that technology is only a tool. We must be ready to work with better, or worse tools than what we are used to. Aren't we the ones who teach our students to be adaptable? :-) Also, I believe real teachers are always the best in doing impromptu stuff and ad-libs! *wink*

I think the one and the only thing important here, is to constantly practice and keep yourself updated with the new features. It can be difficult to know everything at once, so the more you practice or engage with a particular tech tool, the better you will get at using it!

I am constantly attending other people's trainings and workshops in order to learn from what they are doing and stay current. When I find someone who is really good at something I do I follow them to see what they focus on. I always learn and often make new friends.

As a teacher, you are modelling behaviour on top of the learning process in your area of expertise. Communicating clearly and patiently with students through a tech issue and adapting your plans models resilience and shows students how to be adaptable in the face of mistakes. Show them it's OK to make mistakes and learn from them.

You must be ready to improvise, technology is great and helps us teach and engage students, but it often fails. That is particularly relevant when you are teaching a new topic or a topic outside your direct area of expertise. Be ready to tell a story to your students related to the topic at hand or to the difficulty you are facing. Also, communicate very clearly that they will get the content you were trying to share using the technology that stopped working, this will reassure them.

Sometimes enlisting student support can help build community in that it gives them the chance to do something for you. Depending on the grade you teach, of course.
