I think regardless of the topic of the workship, it is important to target the need of the audience, why did they attend to this particular event? There must have been a need, then I usually try to make it as interactive as possible, enabling myself to know my audience better. This will make them trust the expertise of the speaker/facilitator.

I've facilitated workshops for audiences from engineers to animal control, from building inspectors to HR officers - it is an absolute must to adjust your delivery to not introduce barriers that don't need to be there. WITHOUT losing your integrity. And that's the challenge a great facilitator rises to. For example, when I present to engineers, I use snappy and humourous stories peppered through the theory - and slowly but surely drag them out of their shells. When it comes to HR, I take a very light touch, and just bring them back in when they go off task - as they tend to be able to almost run the show without me sometimes! As an experienced facilitator, I know that the best lightbulb moments come from the floor, not me.

There is one thing that happens to many workshop creators when they start the process of developing a workshop. Imposter syndrome. It is so easy to trick yourself into believing that you don't know enough to share with others. In reality, you have a unique perspective and voice. And your voice is needed. Get clear about what makes you different. What is your story? What brought you to the place where you are today? As you share that story, you will gain confidence in yourself and your skills. Someone needs what you create.

If something falls flat, move on, make a mental note, and move on. Always be in a process of open mindset and improving as you go. I always take away lessons from my participants to share with the next group. I listen intentionally and intently to participants and use them as my springboard.
